So I'm taking my old man away for 4 days in September on a bit of a walking / drinking trip. Any suggestions on whereabouts in Southern Ireland is nice to base yourself close to lots of nice scenery, hills, lakes etc. And obviously lots of friendly nice bars to drink in the evenings?

Cheers

Bray.

Loads of pubs, bars on the seaside plus Bray Head to walk up, before heading into Wicklow Mountains national Park which is stunning.

Killarney would probably be the most obvious place to go. It’s touristy but get over that and it’s a great base. Lakes, mountains, day trips to Dingle or Kenmare for example, Muckross Houseand sourounding walks, etc.

It's not exactly southern Ireland, but I found Galway a buzzing town (big university town, so more much international than you might expect. Plenty of good bars. Watch your accent. Heads will turn when you order.). And Connemara is stunning. Also got over to the Aran Islands, the only place where I heard kids having a kickabout speaking together quite naturally in Gaelic.
I found the Irish friendly enough in general, but some were wary. I have the accent of the oppressor, apparently — Cromwell reincarnated.

I've lived in Galway for just over two years, with all due respect I have never received any negative reaction to being English, aside from rugby banter which I don't care about anyway. So many nationalities pass through the place all year round.

North or South of Galway you have options that fit your criteria - Connemara to the North, the Burren and its lowlands to the South.

Absolutely this.

Fully agree.

Have family between Tuam and Athenry, never had any problems, other than most of them are rags or dipper fans....

Even the little village pubs and some of the pubs in supposedly tougher areas on the outskirts of Galway, never had an issue....there are way more English living here than I expected.....the city centre pubs are so saturated with tourists that I expect you would only get trouble if you were being a gobshite.

Bantry and Skibbereen bloody lovely places. Got married in Bantry almost two years ago and all my friends and family who joined us for England absolutely loved it

Kenmare is on the Ring of Kerry/Iveragh Peninsula, not the Beara.
Of course but with it being only a couple of km off the ring of Beara route I'd have to recommend it as a stop off. I did a night there when I did the Beara and ended up on quite a big night out there with some of the locals.

It's not too far, no. Bad part of the country to give unclear directions though :)
