Var debate 2019/20

It will be, they run offsides through software to accurately get the offsides correct.
Within a margin of error (undisclosed).

Which makes these *very* marginal decisions suspect, regardless of consistency of application.

Fair point but it will benefit Us more than it wont think we will get record penalties this season! That incident on Mahrez we seems to have at least one of those per game.

I feel there are two options. Either you leave it entirely up to technology, and learn to live with it. That jars at the moment, because we're used to a margin of error of maybe a 6-10 inches at the moment and this has suddenly been reduced to 6-10 mm.

The alternative is to set a margin of error for the linesmen, and go with the on-field decision provided an error doesn't exceed that. Say, a linesman can be wrong by 10cm each way, and we live with that scale of human error. Greater errors are corrected by VAR.

The VAR only approach is that it's always right, but slow and interfering. The latter means fewer interruptions, but you have to live with the odd error.

I think I'd prefer the latter...

I certainly hope that is the case!

You'd still have to wait while they check to see if it exceeds the 10 cm margin of error

That’s a great shout

10cm? Thats a massive margin 5 be fine.

It was said that all managers had attended a demonstration and they were unanimously in favour of the use of VAR. It is no point saying that for offside a small distance of, say, 10 centimetres can be ignored. It is either offside or not. If there is any option for small differences to be overlooked it will increase the complaints when United's only just offside goal is allowed and ours is ruled offside. I think it will lead to much greater accuracy and fairness and I find it difficult to imagine how anyone could think differently.

100% agree.

This is from june so sorry to bore you all again but it makes so much sense:

A simple change to the offside law that if ANY PART of the attacker is level then he is ONSIDE. It makes it easier for all to see and hopefully means more goals and hence more entertainment which after all is why we love the game so much anyway.

All other parts of the game require the ball to have completely crossed the line for a goal, throw in etc. so why wouldn't the same principle apply for offside that the player has to be completely beyond the defender. Wait till there's an issue like today but the defender is 60m the other side of the pitch to the attacker. How can it then be claimed that the attacker is gaining an advantage?

I will accept GL decisions but I’ve always been against VAR technology it doesn’t belong in football Take the offside law, introduced in the early days to stop “goal hanging” its been refined over the decades and improved with the phases of play, some may disagree. Today Sterling was, according to the tech was offside, arguments about angles and timing of the freeze frame not with with standing. But, was he deliberately trying to gain an advantage? He certainly wasn’t, so imho he’s wasn’t offside Lots of very good goals like today and the one against Spurs are going to be disallowed for a small mm infringement none of them will be against the reason for the law existing So there will be fewer goals and the spontaneous enjoyment of celebrating the majority of goals will be taken away This can not be good for football A final point is that the linesmen are pretty good at offside and it’s there we should leave it unless it’s a clear and obvious error like the goal for Liverpool v WHU

My hatred of VAR grows.

I’m going to borrow from Ollie Kay: I don’t go to football matches to wait three minutes to see a goal disallowed for a player being 2mm offside.

I don’t want to wait to celebrate a goal.

We are going to have loads of these this year as we score most goals we are going to have to get use to not celebrating straight away.
