Ken Clarke talking total sense here in the House.

Why can’t he have been given the reigns in all this?!

I don't agree with Philip Lee crossing to the Lib dems.
When I vote , I rarely look at the name of the candidates and generally vote for the party I want to win.
Surely there should be a law brought in that states that as soon as an mp defects a by election is triggered within 2 weeks and the mp has the whip withdrawn immediately.
This fellows constituency also voted to leave 55-45.
Pretty sure he'll be out on his ear at the next election along with Soubrey , Ummuna et al
The choice of the Lib Dems to accept him demonstrates how politicians on all sides are putting their morals aside to get their way. This guy has had homophobic views in the past and there has been a resignation within the Lib Dem office already as a result. He should only be allowed to stand as an independent until the next GE as with the rest of them that have jumped.

Christ, Rees-Mogg is an insufferable ****. Thankfully, I think he’s probably hardened the resolve of the rebels tonight.
Oh dear, losing the argument so let's all go ad hominem - but pompous Moggie was spelling out the precise truth. The Remainers are sabotaging Brexit by abusing the constitution and the overturning the democratic decision of the electorate. They howl that a 5 week prorogation is historically unparallelled while failing to acknowledge that Parliament didn't sit at all in September until Blair. Clarke has just claimed that the Conference season is dispensable and unimportant. It's supposed to be the supreme policy making body in the Labour Party - a permanent feature for decades and wasn't even interrupted when the IRA blew up Thatcher. Behind it all is the rank hypocrisy to claim that the their opposition is to No Deal when even the dogs in the street know it is to any form of Brexit.

Really shocked that you like Rees Mogg.

Honest.

Grieve skewered Rees Mogg beautifully.

This is turning into a great day and I sense one that will be remembered.

I’m 36, Ken Clarke has been a Conservative MP all my life(or as near that makes no difference) so the idea that by the time I go to bed, Boris Johnson will have effectively kicked him out of the Party makes me feel a little odd

Now, I’ve no particular feelings on Ken Clarke’s policies one way or the other but he seems a decent chap and the thought of the likes of him being turfed out and replaced by (essentially) disciples of Farage makes the likelihood of this country becoming a pretty unpleasant place all the more likely

Rees Mogg might be done ad hominem on here but he was destroyed just there by Clarke on policy. Don't think Eric needed to add to that tbh.

It did produce 200 pilots to keep the real Nazis at bay though so nuking might be a tad unfair.

Actually there was a study done that said the middle classes kept the RAF going. Even Churchill agreed. Old Etonians were a small number in comparison.
