The people of Europe choose their MEPs who are empowered to have that choice, just because you can't vote personally doesn't make it an unelected position. She only got enough votes due to polish and Italian MEPs pushing her over the line. I agree with the principle you're saying, it's still an elected position though (and by the heads of states too)
MEP's are elected but they then align themselves into factions to become a party of parties.
The largest party is dominated by German MEP's who are also members of the German government party CDU and the leader of this EU party is also German...
The second largest party which is socialist has even more German MEP's than it has UK MEP's (Labour).
You can see where this is going, the Tories make up the 6th largest faction and so are essentially pointless.
The Tories have the same amount of power in the EU Parliament that the Greens have in ours.

You said we should have a president (or PM for UK) that is elected by all the electorate in the EU.
We don't vote for the PM in this country so why should the EU citizens vote for the president?
By the way, your comment on another thread about the EU having overall control of all the countries in it is exactly the way I would like it to go

I’m not sure what that has to do with what I put. They’d have more members for a start if more voters voted for their candidates...I’m pretty sure they used to be in the EPP themselves too before they created their own group.

Yes I said that. Our Parliamentary system isn't really relevant to it. Anyway my opinion is our system is archaic and past its usefulness.
There could be a prospective President elect put forward by the all the separate groupings in the EU Parliament, then everyone in the EU votes for which President they think is best suited for the job using whatever electoral system is decided upon. You then end up with a President. He could then appoint the commission because he has a democratic mandate to do so just as a PM of this country has the democratic right to form a cabinet.
As for why should it be voted on, simple, it is more democratic and the President would be accountable to the electorate. That accountability confers legitimacy and could pave the way towards a Federal Europe that is fully democratic. Which I don't believe any democrat could argue against apart from on a nationalist standpoint. As I abhor Nationalism I would be happy to see it gone.
Does that make my point clearer pal?

I'm voting for Lithuanian number two. The other one's a ****.There might not be a German candidate or an English candidate.
It might be a race between 2 Lithuanians, a Cypriot and an Irishman. One representing the left, one the centrists, one the right and one the greens.
