The other thought I had - absolutely ridiculous though it may sound - is, does the legislation actually obliged us to stay in even if the EU grant an extension?

What I am suggesting (I know it sounds like an implausible oversight) is perhaps Johnson asks for an extension, the EU grant it and Johnson then says "thanks but we're off anyway".

No - its watertight. Every step is covered.

This goes out to all, leave and remain alike.
Judging by the reactions to Johnson from almost all on here and the belief that he is still disingenuous regarding his extension letter intentions.
If you all think he is untrustworthy, then why in God's name should NI/Ireland/EU take anything on the never never from him.

There is a complete lack of goodwill and any agreement with him has to be nailed down, legally binding, totally unambiguous.
These things take time (see GFA for details)
No one should believe a word this prick says. Not remain, leave, English, Irish, EU, Brenda next door, my cat, the fridge. Every single object in the world should just assume whatever Johnson is saying is a lie.

No, not even in the slightest. Perfect example was the other day, the deal he described to the tory conference wasn't the same deal he's given to europe, but he's going on the (probably correct) assumption that enough people will believe his bullshit, he'll win the next election, and he'll get away with this shit. Again.
We can only hope so

I would like him to fuck right off

Just get Brexit done first

It seems strange - all this exultation about him having to back down. As if this is going to damage him - humiliate him - why on earth would it?

Surely it just strengthens the narrative of him striving to get Brexit done but the EU sycophants and elite are preventing him

Plays well for a GE I think

Yeah, that's what I've been saying. There's enough people out there dumb enough to believe his shit they will vote for him.

My thinking is though the day he puts the letter in could well be the day to pull the no confidence vote trigger. If he has asked for an extension could he even count on ERG support. So any back door deal he's thinks he's done with Hungary or anyone else would be wasted as he'd be out of government while the extension is considered by the EU.As soon as the extension is granted we'd go for election, an election he'd have to fight having asked for the extension he'd always said he wouldn't, and with the BP party fighting against him.

there is a core of hardright thatcherists that will back johnson no matter what. He could eat a baby live on stage and his apostles on here would still back him.Their hatred of every other party far outweighs trivia like truth and integrity criminal behaviour, anything in fact that stymies their mad scramble to escape their nemesis that they label the Eu. There can be no compromise that leaves us better than we have. Fuck brexit and its billionaire backers and the alt-right victims-r-us conspirators. If it drags on for years its still better than surrendering.....

A very good point that I hadn't considered

Hungary will do what is in the best interests of Hungary. None of the countries being bandied about are doing anything other than voting for an extension. Poland has its citizens here to protect and they have already voiced concern at how a no deal Brexit effects them. We had all this nonsense last time round.
