Wolves (H) Post-Match Thread

The best pass of the day was the one Jesus slipped through in the box. Very direct, north/south, playing into vacant space. Problem was neither david or gundo were trying anything of the sort all day and kept taking the cheap pass out to the wing which ended in a dopey cross.

still think foden would have been a better bet for that kind of directness...and the other thing about Phil is that he can actually shoot from various ranges and angles, which we could really use. In addition to his pace I think that’s the real thing we miss in sane.

Danilo's at Juve (was signed as a utility player), Sane, when fit, gets picked when he does what Pep wants him to and next season Foden will get the chance to stake a claim when David goes at the end of the season. But he won't have the place automatically - there will be competition.
Sane was not first choice at the tail end of last season. He is always quick to be hooked when he makes a mistake too. Pep is always quick to make negative remarks toward him.

Sane has a better per minute goal contribution ratio than Sterling who the media and Pep salivate over every week but Pep never has a kind word to say about him.

Danilo was never trusted for more than a few games even when Walkers form was dire. So much so Pep shipped him and £30M off to Juve in exchange for a player who, on the face of it, isn't even a significant upgrade.

Pep has some major blind spots when it comes to individual players and as soon as they get on his bad side it seems virtually impossible for them to get back.

On the other hand players like Gundogan & Walker can seemingly do nothing to keep them out of the team for a significant period, despite whatever mistakes they make.

What's done is done now with Danilo, and probably Sane too but unfortunately it feels like Foden is rapidly falling into that same group who just can't win Peps trust no matter what they do. I don't want to see that play out.

Imho, selecting that midfield 3 was a mistake in the absence of KDB. Bravo or Foden - and arguably both ‐ should have played either side of Rodri, and provided the energy and spark which i felt we lacked. It was all too ponderous.
I wasn't at all impressed with Cancelo, nor the decision to bring Zinchenko on at half time - perhaps Walker was injured, i don't know, but, otherwise, i wouldn't have subbed him because of how ponderous we were, and he can inject pace.
Praying we get some of the injured players back soon, otherwise it'll be curtains for the league, as we now have to get something at Anfield in 4 weeks. Our prospects of that look very slim unless the aberrations which were on show today are all cut out. Will we stay only 8 points behind until then?
Anyway, that's now 2 very bad days at the office from the first 8 days.
Keeping the faith, but struggling after that showing.

Not the best game to take my daughter to for her first one. Number 1 son is very miserable this evening too.

Not much creativity to get around their immovable defence, and too many times we easily lost possession for Wolves to break and we did not learn. you could see it coming.
We also seem to not go on the break these days, but when the chance is there it stalls part way and gives the opposition time to get back, and then we start over again just passing around the box and the chance is lost.
There were several times when the opportunity to pass to Aguero was on, but instead it went sideways too.

bloody hell just stepped out onto the balcony
Actually I think you're partially right. We've delivered the best football we've ever seen in this country in the history of English football
It's been a privilege to watch. I've felt privileged to watch it from my seat. Everytime I tell someone I'm a Manchester city seasoncard holder they go Wow

But IMHO we need now a couple of seasons to recharge. Im not overly worried

Cheer up guys. I've just poked my nose into Red Cafe and they're talking about the R word
And even when we were truly shit we just got on with it. Wolves did a job on us it happens. Can’t be arsed reading 90 pages of moaning.....

A couple of draws is all they need..

That’s Assuming we go on a winning run which at the moment with this defence doesn’t look that likely. To date we are actually averaging 2 points per game which Is 76 points if carried on all season. Way off our normal performance levels.

It’s not just the defence though. The whole team needs to up the defensive work. The back four is very vulnerable when attacked at pace. In the last two seasons, We negated the threat by defending as a team and pressing the hell out of teams. We aren’t doing it often enough currently and the ball is going from our attack to them having a chance way too quickly. Everton had too many chances for my liking last week and today Wolves could have scored 5 although all were created by our sloppiness.

I haven’t read every post but the Gundogan supporters are conspicuous by their absence. Perhaps they have seen the light. I cannot believe he is picked ahead of others. I can only imagine he has some sort of hold over Pep
I’ll bite...

I think Pep has horses for courses, and he sees Gundo as both a good distributor of the ball and someone who creates both chances and goals for himself.

Of course, I will bow to the superior knowledge of the Forum, as opposed to taking heed of the best manager in the world who has seen and coached more world class midfielders than anyone on earth!

All they need for what? It’ll take a lot more than a couple of draws. I think we’ll improve our points per game as the season progresses, resulting in a points haul of high 80s, perhaps 88/89 points, similar to the Mancini/Pellegrini title winning hauls. It’s about the level we are at with this defence. It’s a very good level, but the standards have been raised now in terms of league winning totals.

Liverpool would need to drop around 25 points for us to win the league in my opinion. So that’s 12/13 draws, not a couple! Or more realistically, about 4 defeats and 6 draws.

In the history of football, I wonder if any team has attempted to cross the ball as many times as we have in our last two games and liks us, not managed to pick out a team mate
You think with a forward line of about 5ft8 against a line of 6ft+ defence it’s not the smartest ploy but they persisted the same tactics for 95 mins today obviously hoping it would come good. They were even hitting long balls forward from the back today, they obviously thought Wolves had a weakness aerially.

Were you not here for Pep’s first season, or the numerous pressers where he has told the world we play a high risk game, which leaves us vulnerable at the back at times? Throw in Otamendi diving in an Olympic sprinter getting a head start on Fernandinho, and you are bound to have a few one on ones at the back. They scored two of them in the last 10 mins, when we were pressing like mad for the win....which has saved us in numerous occasions, but cost us today.

I just thank god some of you don’t support teams like Southampton or Watford, FFS!! There would be a run on razor blades!!!

Laporte injury has hit us hard, but the biggest problem is Pep not realising that Gundsgon is not good enough as an attacking midfielder and whatever his reason is fo not starting Bernado especially when KDB isn’t available.

Wolves are hardly terrible. On their day we all know they can give anyone trouble.

Not terrible but hardly fantastic either. I think we give them a bit too much credit. If we only had defenders who can actually defend we would put out atleast a few of their counter attacks. Otamendi these days would struggle for a place in Everton, let alone for the Premier League champions. He was fantastic in 17/18 but it’s been all downhill from there.

I honestly don’t know to do with our defense but it’s obvious we have to axe Otamendi and buy Laporte’s long term partner in January. I know Laporte and Stones are injured now but we keep spending crazy amounts of money and still concede almost everytime the opposition attacks us. How many times don’t you listen to Pep’s postmatch comments where the opponents have ”three chances and score three goals”.

With the quality and the experience we have we should be able to fend off a few counter attacks, even when our starting CBs are injured and even for a bad day, we have to be better than this.
