In hindsight, having few barriers was foolhardy but understandable when the economy needed willing workers, and it also served the geopolitical purpose of allowing the UK to steal an economic march on its European partners/competitors. For the European Union, it also kept the idea of free movement alive when its main proponents were selfishly recalcitrant and allowed its members to delude themselves into thinking that the UK had willingly embraced the project.

One would like to think it will be a lesson learned, but I rather doubt it.

Opening it up was definitely the right policy but it wasn’t a policy, in that they just ignored it totally, once the barriers the Tory had put up were tore down.

Had they organised and worked out the level of numbers needed, even if a large number and a better integration policy, we’d have probably avoided resentment, whether that is/was right or wrong, in certain areas of the public.

I'm still just hoping everyone will come to their senses and we find middle ground but have to be honest my hope is fading fast. We had problems before but now with this I can see us all being ripped apart for god knows how long. I was naive but I didn't think we could be as divided as we are.
Remain have nothing to compromise on, the aim of closer ties with europe is blown out of the water, by even the softest of soft brexits,. brino or whatever slogan wrapped round leaving is tagged on. Perched on the cliff-edge, you only have two choices, remain or die, that is where we are, brexit promises of a ladder back up to where we started from.....dmaf. The inevitable outcome of every spat in our broke politics ends in left versus right, fixing the problems becomes incidental, happens every time and will carry on as long as we are chained to fptp by it's supporters.

Plenty voted for it, they were just unhappy with the unreasonable time frame. On top of that, has an Opposition(or anyone) voted for a key government policy without the economic forecasts being available?

In my opinion, it is unreasonable to expect Opposition parties to wave through policy without time to scrutinise, amend if necessary and without the figures to back up the Government’s optimism and beliefs

I understand and totally respect your views.
It might not seem it for someone who has been very vocal about leaving but I'm past caring now and dont give a fuck.
This country was finished a long time ago and Brexit wont heal anything.
Personally I think Brexit won't happen and it will get over turned.
All I can say is from my point of view is I will never vote again and a lot of others feel the same.
The way the politicians have behaved is totally disgraceful and basically what we have is a pro remain parliament doing everything to stop it.
I predict mass civil unrest somewhere down the line.

It will happen, there might need to be another election but it will happen.

Part of the problem has been triggering article 50 way too soon. Had they done it right, we should have done the majority of the planning beforehand (which is what Cummings has always said should have happened too). The moment they triggered it without a plan, it was always going to get messy.

Thersea May out a WA on the table a long time ago, which if pro-leave MPs would have backed, we would be out by now. The trouble is they didn't like - the stage of 'liking' had gone long before that. Remember the MPs know exactly the problem with every option that has been put forward and there isn't a good one. If there was, it would have been voted through by now

However the trouble with honesty is, no one wants to hear it. A senior MP cannot stand up and say 'its not as good as staying but I'll vote anyway' - actually, a few have. Mogg has said it will take 50 years for the benefits and Leadsom has said people have voted to lose their jobs. I might be wrong on that one.....

I doubt there will be unrest as people have jobs to go to and the weather won't be great between now and Jan 31st. People only tend to riot when jobs are taken away which if some of the economic analyses it to be believed is likely with any form of Brexit or freedoms are removed i.e the freedom to visit, travel and work in any of 27 other countries. Maybe if the Government should release its own economic impact assessments and we could then at least put the financial concern to bed once and for all.

On a wider point, who exactly are you unhappy with i.e people, group, party etc.?

That's a wonderfully British sentiment. Reminds me of Asterix in Britain and the Britons stopping mid-battle to have tea. :-)

It's true!!
Remember the London riots which game up to Manchester in August. Seems great after a few cans in the garden, once it starts pissing it down it's no so attractive. Particularity for those with work in the morning

Quite. It's one of those peculiar things. Were there to be a major recession and it was a hot summer, one could imagine people rioting in the belief that an undelivered Brexit would immediately solve their plight. Similarly, people might still riot if Brexit has happened and they believe that overturning it will return them to the state they were in before.

Needs to be planned like the D-Day landings, with an eye to the weather forecasts rather than the economic forecasts. :-)

The French are normally running away from trouble but we need somebody to maintain the pressure... our parliament will swing the lead for months or years otherwise...

So, we aren’t taking control? You want an un-elected foreigner to have an influence over our democratically elected UK Parliament?

This is very dodgy ground
