My post lady is wonderful out in all weathers to give me stuff people have sent me and I would like her to be able to continue what she does but I would posit a few questions that this thread hasn't as yet addressed.

How much is the average postie paid?
How are their jobs under threat?
What in particular are the points of interest on their working conditions they want to change?

Around 11.50 an hour but contracts vary between 20/38 hours pw. People on 20 hours will generally work more but that is not guaranteed and the management want to introduce zero hours contracts an obvious red line for any union worth it's salt. Another aim is they want to end the universal service which is the commitment to deliver to every UK address 6 days a week. This obviously negates the need for day off cover duties meaning the loss of jobs have heard figures of up to 20000. At the moment I get one in four Saturdays off and going to a 5 day week appeals but rumour has it that the plan is to bin off fucking Tuesdays !
If I read your 3rd question wrong apologies but we are not asking for anything they are ones who want change the conditions secured in last year's agreement. Sick/ holiday pay pensions nothing is off the table for this new CEO.

97% you say, was it a postal vote ? I am surprised that many got delivered.

Thanks for the reply mate, zero hours sounds terrible and I support you and your colleagues. Once we lose the Royal Mail we lose a part of our culture too.

Irrespective of any other issues the workers may have, the fact that zero hours contracts are being brought in is just wrong. I could, maybe, understand zero hours in a very small number of jobs but a postman ! This alone shows the company is being run by people who have no regard for their own workforce.

I'd argue that the sentence:

Is a better reasoning than all of the solidarity arguments put together. Or its the one I find most appealing.

I don't care. I know some will say well they knew what they were signing up for but...…. I want some one to explain how in a modern work environment zero hours works. Don't get me wrong I know the fundamentals but please, someone explain how it is good for the worker.
