IFS Paul Johnson on Politics Live reveals Labour manifesto plans will result in us having among highest corporate tax regimes in the world. It involves a 10% expropriation of share values over 10 years and windfall taxes on 'profiteering' oil and gas suppliers. The companies planning to invest in this country will take note of this alarming prospect.

Then Paul Johnson is wrong . Labour plan to increase Corporation Tax which will make the UK tax level at 26% . However they also plan to abolish 'sweetheart deals' between the Government / HMRC and the company which leads to companies like Google paying £36.4 million in tax on £6.1 billion of turnover.
.
Our corporation tax rate is one of the lowest in the OECD group of economically advanced countries. We have the lowest rate of corporation tax in the G7 group of leading nations. Even Labour’s increase to 26% would only put it slightly above the OECD average of 24%, and as the graph illustrates, it would be lower than any other current G7 rate.

Figures from first week of election campaign show Conservatives received millions more in large donations (over £7500) than any other party:

Tories £5,673,646
Lib Dems £275,000
Brexit Party £250,000
Labour £218,500
Alliance (NI) £60,000
Greens £30,000

That is what everyone is up against, rich people donating knowing full well tax cuts will make it them back and then some. £200k for a game of Russian tennis Boris?

Sadly he's lying through his teeth. Labour would raise it to 26% and 26% most certainly isn't the highest in the world lol.

I can’t follow Labour to where they are going here. They’re seriously at risk of putting many people out of work and bankrupting the country.

We’re not going to be competitive at all after this.

Short sighted again .... the world is changing at an ever increasing rate.... (Read the Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski) .... Amazon is trailing a supermarket with one member of staff... if you have an Amazon account it will be recognised (as will everything you put in your trolley) and your account will be debited when you leave the premises.... there are already huge warehouses where the operatives are robots .... we are a few years away from driverless vehicles which will end the jobs of taxi / bus / delivery drivers and dramatically reduce the numbers of vehicles on the road and virtually end car ownership.... self checkouts at supermarkets are already here and there are plans in place to link your card to age verification (in Norway you can pay by contactless / your mobile device / or a chip in your thumb) so no one will have to authorise your age restricted (alcohol) purchases.

This is why forward thinking people are talking about a '4 day week' .... free broadband .... minimum income (already trialed in Sweden and Norway).. lifetime education

Did you read the Labour policy to give workers the ability to consult on the implementation of new technology?

That means the unions will decide whether automation goes into companies which basically means it won't.

So everything you are talking about (certainly on automation) is not going to happen if Labour get in.

Imagine proposing driverless trains to the train drivers union and this Labour Party that will be in charge, good luck!

The world you are describing ironically is a product of capitalism which I suppose you oppose....?

They said the industrial revolution will put everyone out of work, they’ve said it about computers and it may yet with AI but it may not, our workforce may change but I’m not up for doing it in 2020 when AI isn’t making mass redundancies at the moment, that’s what Labour’s policies will do.

It means the ability to consult ..... it's about 'no surprises' as the workers will have to be advised rather than turning up and being told you're out of a job . the next 10 15 years are going to be interesting. it stops companies (like ASDA) treating staff like shit forcing them to take reduced contracts , knowing that a lot will leave that can be easily replaced by self checkouts ..... its also one of the reasons why we want employee representation on company boards.

Cant see driverless trains coming soon ...... Metrolink yes (and free travel as well )

The IFS is the most reliable source of information on these matters but it is not alone in its initial judgement - this is the FT

The crucial point is that no other developed country would raise the proposed level of revenue by such punitive levels of tax on business and high earners. Watch and weep as the real position is explained by Paul Johnson in his contributions throughout this important programme and the complete failure of McDonnell's principal economics advisor James Meadway to counter the analysis. There is also some entertaining Tory & LibDem squashing along the way.
