Var debate 2019/20

When the idea of VAR was first introduced, I was in favour of it. The idea of correcting blindingly obvious mistakes and bringing more consistency to refs decision making, is something I thought would improve the game.

However, the way it has been implemented is nothing short of a national scandal. I can only think that the referees are sabotaging it to hinder its long-term future, as a justification to its current use. Look at the facts:
  • They have brought in differing rules for attackers and defenders.
  • They are looking for the tiniest reasons to disallow goals.
  • They are still making inconsistent decisions in regards to handballs and penalties.
  • The paying fan has a worse match experience than the Sky/BT viewers.
After the referring debacle at Anfield a few weeks ago, I watched this weekends games with interest. Crystal Palace had a goal chalked off and Leicester received a penalty, both being confirmed by VAR, for pushes that were identical to the Mane shove on Sterling. Sterling also had a goal ruled out for a very similar incident to the Salah goal as well. One of which was scrutinised to the Nth degree and the other not even worth a replay. That from the exact same broadcaster!

What is now beyond proof is that the game is accepting that referees can interpret the laws of the game differently. If VAR isn’t being used to add consistency to the game then what exactly is the point in it?

Nail on head but look at the top of the table & you’ll see the whole point of it

I agree with every word. Silly me thought, what could possibly go wrong with VAR. we have loads of pens not given and once someone looks at them again we’ll get them given and once people look at Liverpool’s ‘penalties’ they’ll be shown to be the diving cheating ****s they are

Not worked out too well

The problem is that the wrong questions are being asked. The technology is not the problem, it’s the implementation that is.

It is being used as a tool to feed the egos of the refs who don’t want to admit they made a mistake. The fact that VAR is being used to justify wrong decisions and the refs are allowing this to happen is wrong. It also questions their integrity.

We all know that referring is a hard job and a thankless task at times. But they’re not fucking martyrs. They get well paid for the role and are involved in the biggest sport in the country. I honestly don’t think anyone would give two shits if Michael Oliver got overruled 3 times per game so long as the correct decisions were made.

What's happened to the game of football?..

It's been ruined by the faceless people in charge of the Premier League .. It's not a sport, it's a business and it's being run as one to maximise profits and exposure globally..

I was there today and feel more and more detached from the game..

The guy I sit next to goes everywhere to watch city, never missing a game, home, away, Europe, he said today he never celebrates a goal now as you cannot be sure it's going to be given.. How sad is that.. this guy's life revolves around following City and he can't enjoy a goal when it's scored...

I celebrated Raheems goal today as I did Gabbys against Spurs..!

The passion has been sucked out of the game and it's gone for good in my opinion..

We might as well stay at home and vote on the red button to determine results now because football has been ruined..!

It’s sad but very true , the games been stolen off us.

Ah right,as i say they tried last week and in return they gave us mariner on var and chalked off a goal, pep is livid as are the players but they won't scrap var so i don't know what else the managers and players can do/say without getting bans which is no help to anyone, all the fans can do is turn their backs on var reviews and sing you corrupt bastards and fuck var,not going so depriving the players of the support is no real answer, all for one and all that stuff

After a post coital break, the following came to mind.

We know it's bent. We know it's true.
We know it's bent. We know it's you.
We know it's bent. The Courts will know it too.
We know it's bent. It'll be the end for you.

Lineker as an aside on motd made a good point about the disallowed palace goal. If it hadn't gone in then would it have been a pen? Answer obviously no as this sort of pushing and shoving goes on at corners and neither player was in danger of troubling the ball.

Too many lemmings voted for it Bill; assuming that technology was the answer to everything and everyone against it was a luddite. As long as there is any human opinion whatsoever in a referral, it is open to bias, manipulation and outright corruption. All 3 as we're witnessing now.

My favourite (read infuriating) thing about the pundits arguing that the Ayew incident was “clearly a foul” after VAR review is that they are the same pundits that said the push on Rodri was not a penalty after VAR review.

can never turn my back on city and a little thing like VAR will not stop me watching city . but for watching other games and hoping the officials treat the game teams the same as when they are doing city games are gone. it so hard watching games like liverpool and united because its not being played with the same rule book and clear cheating is going on

today it final hit home that VAR is fully in control of the game and they will pick the team they want to win the league and even cups, its a sad day for football and any fairness and lady luck has gone from the game and you have to beat the system before you beat the team

Put it this way. Due to the cheating by match officials I will not be watching games via the inexplicably restrictive UK broadcast of live game rules.
I am not ceasing to support City. I just will not pay towards the corrupt system.

It's shite, but it's saving me a small fortune. Said last year that my ticker couldn't stand waiting 3 minutes to celebrate a goal and I was finished. So far I'm about 500 quid up. Let's see what happens next season?

Here we have it - exactly how it was done live on TV. why is the line not level with the chelsea defenders hand !!!!!!!
I see one thick red line. Roughly scaled it is about 4 inches thick, or 10 cm, which is about the margin of error based on camera frame rate. The red line is drawn at an apparently arbitrary position, at an arbitrary time. What is the significance of the red line? It could be drawn anywhere. It seems to intersect sterlings head. The shoulder of the defending no 15 is to the left of sterling.
This picture proves nothing.
This picture raise questions of corruption.
This picture suggests level and therefore onside.

How do Leicester retake the penalty following encroachment by Madison. It’s one thing the VAR making arbitrary subjective decisions but referees getting the laws wrong is unforgivable and nobody has picked them up on it. Encroachment by an attacker, resulting in no goal, is a free kick for the defending team. Vardy takes penalty and misses, Madison encroaches and scores. Penalty missed, attacker encroached, free kick to Brighton. Dean seems to have reinterpreted the laws and allowed Vardy to retake. A shocker.....
