Benjamin Mendy - 2019/20 Performances

He has been better of late an looks to be getting some form back, no coincidence that this is happening as he is getting a run of fitness,

Apart from 1 sloppy pass I thought he was OK today. When on form he is still our best LB.

If it's anything like what Guardiola initially wanted with Stones, I would suspect he's encouraging Mendy to play these riskier passes inside. To play with balls.

He needs to better, of course, but he has to work through the sloppiness to get rid of the rust. If he's still like this at the end of the season with no signs of improvement after a whole batch of games under his belt then it'd be a much bigger concern.

Still scared of getting injured for me but it will take time for him to get confidence that he is fully over the injury.

Slowly getting better.

Confidence is a huge thing (said it in the Raheem thread n’all). If he’s not confident in his body it’ll affect his game. He’s picked up a lot of injuries and psychologically that can be huge.

Once that comes back he’ll be a decent player for us.

He's definitely sloppy at times. But that doesn't mean he had a bad game (I know you didn't say that).

Given that he's a defender and he defended well in a team that's had defensive issues it should be enough to warrant praise.
I got slated in the post match thread for saying he gives me the shits. It is precisely the sloppy passing he does at random intervals that causes me this concern, I want him to do well but I am sorry he worries me.

For me, it's his lack of defensive ability - he frequently fails to stop crosses on D, and is out-of-position at times given his attacking instincts (but mostly recovers due to pace when this happens).

His greatest assets are pace (not sure if he still has this following multiple injuries) and his whipped crosses into the box (he's starting to get back into form in this regard).

I'd like to see a full season with a fit Mendy before making up my mind for sure.

Ideal for low block teams but still unsure about him against stronger teams especially in Europe.

He is a great lad trust me. Down to earth. He was unplayable before injury and the signs are really positive. It will take him time but his football and personal friendship with Foden shines through. They are telepathic. He defends well when told to like at Liverpool last season.

@benmendy23: “The first time I knew I wanted to join City was when I played against them with Monaco. We came to the Etihad - we lost, but the atmosphere was on fire. I was talking with Kevin [De Bruyne] after the game and I told him I wanted to join Man City..."

“I didn’t know him, and we had lost the game, but I was so happy with the atmosphere and everything! At the end of the season Bernardo Silva sent me a picture with a Man City shirt and I said I’d like to come too.” [via @ManCity]

“The first time I met Riyad we had just finished a training session for Le Havre. One guy [Riyad] comes in late because he’d missed his train. It was like two hours late; all the people were stretching, and this skinny boy arrives..."

“The manager says run and he races around. Everyone says ‘what are you doing? Why do you run so fast?’ He said, ‘I was late, I'm not here for fun, I'm here to be serious.’ We see him on the pitch and it's score, score, score. He’s a good guy.”

Looking sharp today. Every low cross is finding it's target and leading to something dangerous. I think he's back for real this time. A lot better than Chilwell today, who we were supposed to replace Mendy with.

He's making certain people in this thread look stupid every week now.

Look forward to the "he's done" "he can't defend" "he's got the touch of a donkey" comments next time he has a slightly off game.

I'd like to think that Angelino starting over him for Liverpool pushed him to get back to his best faster. He isn't there, but he's really close and glad we stuck it out with him.

So no more we need a LB, we have 3! Would be a stupendous waste of money.
