Seriously, our only real leverage is in financial services so we can be sure that the people working in that industry will be no worse off. Shame we can’t say the same for everyone else.

the citizens , businesses and countries within the eu are better off with a FTA with the UK than not and that’s why I am confident we will get a deal that is in the best interests of both unions.

I'd imagine if we don't get enough economic bad news this year, then Jan 21 will become the new date for the disaster scheduled for 24 Jun 2016.

No. I think the optimism is rather damaging and probably to some extent fuelled the leave vote. At least with doom mongering and pessimism we xanal claim some small victories and be right eventually in the manner of a stopped clock.

Firstly, all previous negotiations have been held in Brussels whereas now they will alternate between London & Brussels.

As time went on and May firstly backed off from no deal is better than a bad deal and then she was effectively a minority government with a Remain Parliament ruling the roost the EU could afford to take the view that Brexit would never actually happen. You had the bizarre situation of British politicians going to Brussels to agree tactics in order to block Brexit. What a gift that was for the EU.

Johnson has an 80 majority (in practice 88 seats) and an iron grip on the Conservative Party. All the Lib Dem Europhiles have been binned and no faction will have the means to challenge him. This means he can decide what tactics and negotiating stance he wants to adopt and they will only change if he chooses to alter them.

All this is exactly as it should be. If you are entering a tough set of negotiations then you need to have laser focus.

Yes. FTA’s are largely only applicable to goods. Service trade is hindered by domestic law and regulations which have to be harmonised for services to flow freely. There are still barriers to trade in services between individual States in the US. Canada agreed an internal trade agreement in 2017 between its own provinces to bring down trade barriers and create ‘a more modern and competitive economic union’. The EU Single market still has areas to be addressed but is no less advanced than the US.

Absenting ourselves from the Single Market will impact our service exports to the EU (we have a 50/50 split between goods and services if I recall) and the less we align, the greater the barriers the greater the impact. Advancing the Single Market would advantage the UK. Standing on the outside does not.

Yeah but Brexiteers won’t be told. The delusion is too strong. And when the Govt does fold, as it did in the WA, and the outcome is only mildly crap and not doomsday, Johnson will proclaim he proved the naysayers wrong and wrought a mighty victory and Brexiteers will crow and hold more parties.
