Irish Current Affairs

The most galling thing for me following the good Friday agreement was parties and individuals continuing with this new found air of respectability.

Like with most conflicts/troubles at the heart is people who are power grabbers.
It was necessary for both sides to move on though.

They're aware of it, they just don't give a fuck. They've seen their future prosperity fucked by Fianna Fail and all economic recovery channelled by Fine Gael towards their own voters in the most privileged parts of the country. They want change.
And nobody can criticise them for that. There isn’t an alternative credible left facing party for them to vote for is there?

Well as I said a few pages ago Irish politics is not black and white and that goes for north and south.
To try and make the various shades of grey of the last 100 years alone into black or white is not only learning nothing from the past but it also disregards the 100 years before it.

It’s like I said earlier. How far do you want to go back. Because without legitimising one side or another’s actions throughout history, there are far more people who want to move on than want to wallow in the past.

I love history as I feel it helps you understand why we are where we are.
But the future of this country belongs to those that are willing to be progressive.
If SF don’t respond to the needs of the majority who want to move on and tackle issues that matter to them, they will not last on the crest of their current wave.

Not really. Labour got decimated for supporting FG through the austerity period and the others are new parties establishing themselves. Outside of SF the left are very fractured.

Anyway looks like it'll be:

FG 36
FF 37
SF 37
LAB 6
PBP 5
GRE 12
SD 6
AON 1
IND 20

Greens, the smaller left parties and independents hitting the FF seat total hard.

if those numbers end up right, no two parties can form a coalition.

if those numbers end up right, no two parties can form a coalition.
Sinn Fein pretty much control the following seats for that purpose, a lot of them were won on SF transfers and they're all on the same page regarding health, housing and public services.
LAB 6
PBP 5
GRE 12
SD 6
AON 1

So there's 67 seats in one bloc there. They could form a government without the arsecheeks but with 13+ independents all with their own agenda it wouldn't be very stable.

A strong moral compass seems to have been lost and it's not just an Irish thing.
I dont think there's anything morally wrong with voting SF at this point in time. They aren't representing nationalism (except silly Irisb language nonesense) anymore and they seem to have argued very good points over the past decade. Time to see now if they can accomplish anything good.

I would be shocked if Mary Lou leads a goverment in Ireland. Absolutely shocked. More than likely a Rainbow colilitan between FF and FG with the independents or Greens. There is no way either FG or FF want SF leading us. Fuck me in my area Dessie Ellis got through and there singing rebel songs im like what the fuck is going on here. IF there going to be leading Ireland in the future singing rebel songs and stuff like that leave it to the shower dont do it in public.

I dont know what will come of this goverment or the make up of it. I just feel this time round maybe better the devils you know than the devil you dont. I also feel next time around the smaller parties will get more in. The likes of Social Democrats and PBP the Greens too will only get bigger and bigger it will be colalitions in Ireland for a long time to come.

Really hard to call this.
From FF point of view, strategically what do you do.
It looks like it will come down to two main parties getting together with others from the left.
They would be in the minority and Mary Lou would be Taoiseach.

They may feel they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

If this goes to another election where do you see it going.
If SF played it right they could gone out of it with a bigger mandate. Alternatively if they get in, in any form of government no matter how short, they may find that they are automatically there to be knocked down a peg.

Most likely at this stage is SF/Greens/FF Leighton. If FF go back in with FG it could well spell the end for them both.

I hope SF join with FF. FF aren't as bad as FG imo.

Anything but the Greens. The great distractors. I hope that young people voting for SF over the Greens is a sign that they care more about kids being homeless or old people not getting a hospital bed than them having cycle lanes.

Definitely do not want to hear Rebel Songs from any politician.

As I've said above it looks like SF/Greens/FF to me, with the other left parties beefing up the numbers for votes. I think FF and FG will know their best strategy is to put SF under government level scrutiny and hope they fail.
At this stage if there's a second election I think there could well be a majority from SF/PBP/SDs. None of the three will have trouble recruiting candidates or canvassers after today and they won't get the blame for another election if FF and FG blackball SF.

Tbf to the Greens they've focused on social issues over environmental ones this election, I was quite impressed with them.

Wasn’t only your constituency. It happened in Dublin North West also.
These are the knuckle dragger element that we slag in Britain and it’s what SF have to shake off if they want to add the middle ground to their core base.

A rock and a hard place for FF.
