COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Some sort of expert on the BBC made the point that Hubei province has a population similar to the Uk. They’ve had a couple of thousand deaths (assuming there hasn’t been a massive cover up by the authorities). Which suggests that speculation of possibly hundreds of thousands of deaths in the UK is wildly pessimistic.

although I’m not sure that the UK would be prepared to endure the sort of lock down measures that have been imposed in China. Not when you read reports of the Tenerife hotel where they’ve been told to stay in their rooms but people are on the sun loungers and in the pool.

Trump has just put Pence in charge of the US coronavirus response.

Any non-Christians are ****ed.

once a pandemic is declaired there expecting millions to be wipped off the markets, gold is the only move thats safe but now to late to buy as its rocketed in price

Yes, and I'm sure many here are following investment advice from someone speaking English as a third language. Or at least I hope it's your third language.

The second bit of your post addresses your first.

Whilst it is very likely that the official numbers are much lower than actual numbers (across confirmed cases, severe cases, CFR, and so on; they just revised the R0 up, by the way), they are also actually much lower than they otherwise would be because China has a centralised, authoritarian government with incredible control (politically, culturally, technologically, and physically) over their citizens, allowing them to take drastic action to limit the spread of any viral outbreak.

Such measures cannot be taken or cannot be tolerated in other countries without that level of control.

Gonna be pretty embarrassing when the loungers and swimmers don't come down with the lurgi.. its the news - if they are not scaring you they aren't doing their job......

What about the scientists and public health professionals, is it their job to scare us, as well?

no but remember swine flu - bird flu - SARS any number of outbreaks that those same people were warning would decimate whole populations? This shit happens - nature's way of culling the old and the infirm if you like - there is no way on this earth hundreds of thousands will die in the UK as a result of this.

This appears to be not very contagious and not very lethal but it's getting a lot of press.

That’s out of date, mate — they have revised the R0 up.

Also, comparing a novel virus, which is still in the infancy of it’s outbreak, with no confirmed vaccine or cure, to an “established” virus is comparing apples to oranges.

I am not saying they will.

But part of the reason that SARS, swine flu, and bird flu did not kill more people was because scientists and public health professionals convinced governments and the public to take the threat of the outbreaks seriously. Most researchers credit the eradication of SARS to the serious response — and have estimated it could have been very bad had the response not been comprehensive and aggressive.

And nature has no specific mechanism to cull the old and infirm — it doesn’t *target* anything. It just “does things”. And, as others have pointed out, saying this is part of evolution is based on a misunderstanding of what evolution is. It’s not a directed process, it has no goals, it’s not trying to optimise for anything. Again, it just is. And evolution includes the development of medicine and medical procedures to prolong life in organisms.

cant see it being that much like you say,we will have increased death rate but its certainly a wory for the elderly or those with bad immunne systems

I heard a virologist on the radio point out that every year the winter flu outbreak causes the premature death of 1,600 people. If we surpass that total then its time to be worried.

Again, comparing a novel virus at the beginning of it’s outbreak, with very, very limited data and research, and no vaccine, established treatment regime, or cure, to an ‘established’ virus with extensive data, vaccine, and established treatment regime, with a scaled healthcare system that is *just* able to accommodate the annual outbreaks, is comparing apples to oranges.

It’s very strange that a reputable virologist would make that assertion.

i think it will go past that as the death % rate is higher and it seems to spread easy, the next 7-14 days should give us an idea with whats going on in Italy as they have a care system much like ours, what happens their i think will be the same here
