COVID-19 — Coronavirus

All these people working from home at least my run to work will be easier and I see pollution has dropped dramatically in China, every cloud.

RT @SkyNewsBreak: Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance has told Sky News the coronavirus has a “higher death rate than flu” but adds “for most people - the vast majority of people - this will be a mild illness”

They’ve just had some women who used to be the editor of the Daily Star on talking about ‘more people die from the flu’ - why are people still allowed on TV saying this stuff. She either doesn’t know or is pretending not to know what the difference is. Either way, she shouldn’t be on the telly

Flu itself is classed as a “mild illness” but it’s still fucking horrid if you get it.
Exactly. I do think they need to issue some guidelines on when “Mild illness” turns into “seek medical attention”. Otherwise they’ll have people who have never experienced flu panicking, and people who are seriously ill trying to tough it out

I wonder if calling it a mild illness could be counter productive. Won’t people who are moderately ill, equivalent to a case of flu, panic into thinking they’re going to be part of the 1%. At what point should those who are struggling seek medical assistance?

Not to characterize anyone in any particular way, but have we all lost our minds?

If you get sick, do the USUAL SELF QUARANTINE and stay home. Take care of yourself and exercise the normal cautions (wash hands a lot, use tissues to cough and sneeze and then throw them away in a hygienic manner, keep surfaces clean and as germ free as possible, etc...). If you get sicker, then seek medical care, making sure you accurately describe your symptoms and be tested for COVID-19.

They say 80% of people will have mild symptoms. In fact, we’ve had two cases down the street from me. One of them (the husband) was recently released from hospital, while the wife is still there. He was on the news today and said his symptoms were LESS SEVERE THAN THE REGULAR FLU! He is a 70 year old man, overweight, clearly leading a lower working class life...so a seemingly perfect bullseye for these respiratory viruses...so it’s hard to know who or how it levels some and barely affects others.

I read an interesting description of the manner in which it attacks people and the mechanism of destroying the lungs, by honeycombing them, scarring and hardening them, and then being unable to deal with fluid pooling in them and thus killing them via pneumonia.

Therefore, to me, it seems like the minute you start to have respiratory distress with flu like symptoms, then you get yourself off to the ER for a COVID-19 test!

It’s rather like comparing season flu numbers in the first week of November with those for the whole of the previous winter and deciding there’s no need for a flu vaccine

It will be interesting if they ban goal celebrations, whether players themselves cut out the hugging and kissing. Training grounds do seem the perfect environment for spreading viruses

I doubt they would bother too much with that type of thing, although it would make sense.

If a player at a club contracts it, they will almost certainly have to postpone matches for the next two weeks. Insurers would demand it.

Problem is when people have a cold they got to work and end up passing it on to majority of people! This is a new flu which is easier to catch and and higher mortality mainly to the young and elderly..

We were told yesterday to cut working from the office to 50% of the time, its informal at the moment but it could get steped up further. It makes sense if you can do it easily although my firm is faily advanced with the technology to do it VC meetings and calls from lap tops etc.

I’m hoping the give me a bleeper for fire calls, will take me 20 mins to get to station to turn out, so if you’re in a fire just hold your breath ;)

Very true. So many people get colds and then are off work saying they have flu when really they had no such thing. Proper flu and you feel like total shit and are bed-bound for days and wiped out for weeks.

If someone says there's a £500 in cash at the bottom of the garden if you get out of bed to go and get it, and you're thinking "no way am I moving", then it might be flu.

500?, how bigs the garden?

I thought it didn't affect the young too badly and that it was mainly the elderly and unwell that were at risk.

Yeah but those people then go visit their elderly parents or take their nan out shopping etc and pass it to them without even knowing as they don’t have the symptoms yet themselves. I’m sick of hearing “the young and healthy are ok” it’s just creating complacency amongst that demographic.

True but the post I replied to was saying the mortality rate was higher among the young and elderly and it doesn't seem to be the case that it is higher for the young. In fact it seems lower.

China has a population of a billion or more, this virus has been swanning around there since last year, if I'm not mistaken, the total that have got infected is around 80,000 (presumably growing), why then has somebody on here said the cases could reach 1,000,000 here in 6 weeks? Yes, I get we're a smaller more compact entity but even so, that assumed figure seems a bit excessive? And that's where we are atm, in the land of assumptions, to postulate on the basis of minimal information isn't conducive to maintaining a calm perspective followed by making calm resolutions? It's worrying enough for anyone to think that they may become a victim without adding to that worry with a wild 'guesstimation' isn't it? Be proactive in what we can to help protect ourselves and others, but let's keep the guesses to those that have more idea than us...and my apologies to the poster if they are head of a medical unit that deals with this stuff!

Chief scientific adviser just on the tv asked whether we should be banning large gatherings like football as is being done on Italy.

he said he doesn’t believe they will advise that should be done in the uk.

when challenged he said, in an open air stadium of say 40,000 people if someone has coronavirus there is a low chance of infecting a lot of people .

he said if you start playing matches behind closed doors all people will do is go to the pub etc and watch the game from there. He said in enclosed places that same person with coronavirus has a much higher chance of infecting, albeit a fewer people due to the enclosed environment.

he reiterated that they expect the mortality rate to be 1% or under.
