Where are all these supermarkets running out of food and bog rolls?

I live in Oldham and the only thing most stores have run out of is hand sanitizer
Bog rolls are mainly produced in China.

We are certainly not stockpiling, but we are adopting a policy of “not running out”. Just being a bit more careful to avoid our frequent experience of finding that we’ve run out of stuff. I suppose if everyone does that it would cause temporary shortages

imediate steps should be taken by the Government, either abandon the season or play behind closed doors, suspend flights to italy,to take kids there on a trip at this stage is complete madness and irresponsible by those organising trips, suspend visits to care/rest homes
Understand your reaction about Italy in particular - and wild horses would not drag me there right now. But I think the issue is - continuing the horse metaphor - that the horse has already bolted. We already have infection all over the UK and whether anyone comes in from Italy with it now, will make bugger all difference. I think the reality is 30m plus of us are going to catch this now, one way or another.

If we were going to do anything draconian, we should have done it weeks ago. The thinking back then was that such disruption in itself would have been incredibly damaging and that it probably would not have worked anyway. We will never know, but I suspect they were right.

It’s nit just about the premier league it’s all leagues, promotion relegation etc, if you cancel games and they say oh we will play them in summer, who knows how long will this go on for? Cancel the bloody season if you have to, can’t see the euros or Olympics happening either nit u less some miracle cure is made and that won’t happen for at least 6 months as they have to test it first once they have it.

If they play games behind closed doors we could see quite a few league 1 and 2 clubs go under. They don’t have the luxury of a huge tv deal to fall back on and need the gate receipts.

I still can’t work out why the death rate isn’t considered to be 5-6%

I’m sure they’re not all reporting it wrong but the way I look at it, of all the cases that have been resolved, either a full recovery or death, 5-6% have died. So to me that is the true death rate. Dividing the total deaths into the total no. of cases seems wrong as I think roughly half of the total confirmed cases still have it, 2-3 thousand of them will die. So to me it’s almost 6%?

I’m aware I must be wrong for one reason or another but why is that not the death rate? It makes sense logically (at least to me).
I've struggled with the same puzzle, Trev. Surely Died divided by (Died plus Recovered) is the mortality rate?

There's three possible explanations I can think of as to why that is not what's being reported. The first is that maybe they assume there is a much larger number of infected people who are not in the system at all?

Another possibility is that if you are going to die, maybe you do so early? I.e it takes longer to recover than it does to die? So a higher proportion of the active cases recover, as time goes by.

The third is thst they are just lying so as to not cause complete panic.

But as I type, in Italy, 720 cases have outcomes and of those, 197 have died. That's 27%!!!

I'm afraid that sadly the impetus to make the rest of the season be played behind closed doors will not come from anyone that cares about gate receipts, league 1 or 2, or a couple of teams going under

I honestly think tens of thousands have it already.
I'd say that's impossible at this point. With a 3 to 5:day mean incubation period, that would mean tens of thousands of active cases in 3 to 5 days.

We're seeing doubling of numbers every 3 days ish right now. So that would mean maybe 300 to 500 cases in that timescale - way less than tens of thousands

Last night on the early evening itv news I'm pretty sure the reporter in Italy said 10% of people that get this flu need serious icu hospital treatment with most of those 10% needed assistance with breathing. If that is the case then it would seem to be much more serious than I thought it was. I then checked out the average age of those poor people that have died in Italy and it's 81. So if true it is definitely much more deadly in elderly people.

I know loads who were incredibly rough over Xmas. I think I read on here about a bloke who got flu in Italy back in November and has only just felt better. They have only really started testing for it recently. Loads get flu and dont go to the doctors. I might be wrong but amazed if only 160 odd people have this.

They did say that.

If there was not mass hysteria in the news ( I notice storms and global warming seem not to be an issue now) and we didn't know about covid, nobody in this country as yet would have noticed anything different from any other year. The two deaths among ill elderly folk could have been caused by seasonal flu without being any concern.

I agree, I haven't ever been to the doc's with flu symptoms.

Supermarket was bare of toilet roll this morning. Well, except the full price Andrex stuff of course. There may be a pandemic occuring but it's not bad enough to warrant the extra pound for a moistures Shea butter wiping experience.
People are waiting for the riots to loot all the Andrex stuff.
