Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

interesting to see what develops here

That's the big one, if the Spanish League knocks it on the head then I reckon Italy and France will follow, then we'd probably have no choice.

There's just too many aspects to worry about, fans, players, staff, emergency services, etc... Maybe a postponement would be possible if they move the Euros but sounds like UEFA don't want to do that.

if they dont play domestically they surely cant play the champions league

I honestly do not see how the season can be completed. These are extraordinary circumstances and regardless of teams being pissed off about missing out on promotions and winning stuff sometimes things happen and are more important.

If the season cannot be completed then it has to be expunged. No champions no relegations no promotions.

In terms of European qualification for next season then all that can really be done is the positions at what point the league is suspended determine who qualify.

As for the Euros they are not due to happen until June. There is a very small chance that by then it will be safe to play. Chances are it will not be and may have to be cancelled all together as it is hard to see when you could play it. Perhaps later in the summer or as some have suggested next summer. Though how that will work given the World cup qualifying and is the Confederation Cup due to be played sometime around then?

There is not much appetite for playing games behind closed doors, and there is little doubt you are going to get players infected teams quarantined therefore unable to play.

What about players from other countries who may not wish to be here or Spain Germany but in their own country with their families. More so if they are from a country where it is less prevalent.

I would be amazed if 2 weeks from now there is any football being played in this country, infact if there is either by some miracle the virus will be rapidly disappearing or there will be grounds for criminal prosecution being rightly brought against those who let it continue. The emergency services have to cover football, and they will be far to busy to have the worry of having to attend incidents caused by holding a mass attended event.

Which is why it seems fucking mental that they've allowed the Liverpool-Atletico game to go ahead tonight. Spanish players union want the league cancelled, advice in Spain is not to travel. Getafe president won't send his squad to Milan, authorities in Spain wouldn't even let the AS Roma plane land for their Europa League game. Yet 3000 Madrid natives are coming North West of England for a game that looks like it might not even matter come the end of the season.

Only way to finish the season is a lengthy postponement or behind closed doors (but what's the point in doing that) and even that's risky.

Also if players are self isolating they arent match fit when they come back, Arsenal dont train for 2 weeks and then get thrown into a game against a team who havent how is that fair.

How the hell can the season be cancelled yes would be endless years of piss taking of the scousers but think about it what happens to the promotion and relegation clubs would contest all decisions, the mind boggles at what the outcome would be and how it would work.
I'm not being clever here - indeed I agree 100% with your username, I may just be missing something incredibly simple. Who could complain (apart from the bin dippers) if it stopped today and this season started from scratch again in August with every one in the division they're currently in?

correct, complain at preventing deaths!!

Whatever happens they should not force our leg to be played behind closed doors.

The game will not take place. Seriously, think about it, if you are a player, regardless of the football situation, they and we all have families and are at risk of carrying the disease and spreading it. The players will make a personal decision themselves and if it was me I would not play, travel or even mix in large groups, period. These large organisations that are more focused on profit than well-being will try and force peoples hands. Let them do one, family is first, period, screw their competitions and bent regulations and whatever the outcome life is and should be above profit...

i obviously want Liverpool to go out tonight....but due to what's happening I don't even care now ..pretty sure this tournament will be suspended / cancelled
