COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Hi all.

Can someone please explain to this ignoramus why Covid19 is being treated differently to the seasonal 'flu? As I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), it's no worse. So why the drastic measures for one disease and not the other? Why aren't people with 'flu asked to self-isolate? Why don't countries shut down for 'flu?

I've read that Covid19 can be contained but the seasonal 'flu can't. Why?

Genuine question - I'm evidently missing something; I just can't see what it is and the University of Google isn't helping.

Cheers.

have you not read anything on here ?

this is far more powerful than the flu and far more deadly - so far that it really shouldn’t be compared

Yeah I’m out.

A Europe wide travel ban is dumb, especially if you can fly from Belfast and not Dublin. A ban on cargo (is this right?) is just going to tank the markets even further.

The UK being exempt won’t last until Friday as we start shuttering parts of the economy unless Trump still thinks no one in the UK has it. Assuming Trump thinks that is.

Weird.

I've seen it reported that Ireland might be exempt, it's unclear though. It's possible Donny thinks it's part of the UK!

I'm evidently missing something;
It’s at least one magnitude more lethal than Flu.

There is zero population immunity to this (unlike like the Flu), meaning that as many as 50-70% of the population could catch it.

That’s 50m people.

If it’s lethality lowers to only 1% of those infected (WHO currently still saying 3.4 although we hope and expect that to drop with time) then that means 500,000 dead. Or 10 lots of the Etihad to look at it another way.

Even if you take fatalities out of the equation, 15-20% also require hospital treatment meaning 10-15m could end up in a hospital with it (if left unchecked without measures taken to reduce the contagion spread). If that happened in a short space of time then the NHS would be crippled and many others could die as a result.

Out of morbid curiosity, what made you think it’s only as bad as normal flu?

Time for Boris to come out and say what our stance on it is, something has to give in a bit ,do we wait for hundreds more to die before any action is taken. Washing hands is all we've heard so far, great advice guys would never thought of doing that.

You'd expect that though, its the most populated area of the UK, Hertfordshire is next and more of a worry as much of it is rural, though it includes Watford, it worries me particularly because I work there.

Difficult to say really. it might be clusters in the big towns like the one you mention.

The idea that there weren't any in London was a bit odd.

It’s a fair question, the WHO stated lots of times that they would have called a pandemic ages ago if this was a flu virus. But they still thought this one was containable.

I never found out why either.

Mate of mine and his wife seriously stressing that children face being off from School for a few weeks.

This had not crossed my Mind.

Millions of people will have difficulty going to work. Many of them like his wife who is a Sister at a Hospital are front line in the public sector.

We are in the same boat, Mrs is a Nurse, and i'm in utilities sector on water infrastructure, both of exus wil be expected to work but little ones nursery will potentially be closed, seems daft we are worrying about not being able to do our jobs!

in fairness to him I don’t think that’s the question he was asking.

the WHO have said a lot that they would have called a pandemic ages ago on a flu virus as it’s not containable but they say this one is...

when r0 suggests this is more viral than flu.

it’s a bit counter intuitive and I’ve not heard a reason why 1 is containable and the other isn’t.

He has no choice now. He can’t be seen to be the only leader of a country to do nothing whether he believes it or not!
