COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Hi all.

Can someone please explain to this ignoramus why Covid19 is being treated differently to the seasonal 'flu? As I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), it's no worse. So why the drastic measures for one disease and not the other? Why aren't people with 'flu asked to self-isolate? Why don't countries shut down for 'flu?

I've read that Covid19 can be contained but the seasonal 'flu can't. Why?

Genuine question - I'm evidently missing something; I just can't see what it is and the University of Google isn't helping.

Cheers.
If the question is genuine rather than trolling. The answer is quite simple . It is not like flu it is a lot more dangerous and there is no immunity to it within the community unlike flu.

Should I really be travelling in and out of London every day on packed trains to go work ? Seems absurd right now.

I’m working at home now, any travelling that needs to be done can be done on bike/car. Hope I’m overreacting but the amount of coughing and spluttering on the tube last week, which happens all the time anyway, didn’t fill me with confidence

Trump's a c--- but at least he's doing something serious about it.
All countries should do it.
Containment is the answer.

It’s at least one magnitude more lethal than Flu.

There is zero population immunity to this (u like the Flu), meaning that as many as 50-70% of the population could catch it.

That’s 50m people.

If it’s lethality lowers to only 1% of those infected (WHO currently still saying 3.4 although we hope and expect that to drop with time) then that means 50,000 dead. Or 10 lots of the Etihad to look at it another way.

Out of morbid curiosity, what made you think it’s only as bad as normal flu?
You missed a zero off
We dont want to confuse him

Really sad state of affairs when the government and politicians value money more than lives.
Or maybe they just don't like to see people in hardship for little or no gain? Putting people out of work, forcing companies into bankruptcy. There is balance to be struck and acting too quickly would be wrong, and maybe even counter-productive. Personally I think we've not done enough soon enough but this paranoia and cynicism that there is some hidden agenda driven by snouts in the trough, is just daft.

Containment is the answer.
How can you say he's being serious about it? He's acting on his prejudices, he hates the EU so he slates them for not doing enough to contain it but exempts the UK, who have done the square root of fuck all.

Just spoke to my boss and update from to college last night is no plans to change from present action plan for the time being.

Madness

in fairness to him I don’t think that’s the question he was asking.

the WHO have said a lot that they would have called a pandemic ages ago on a flu virus as it’s not containable but they say this one is...

when r0 suggests this is more viral than flu.

it’s a bit counter intuitive and I’ve not heard a reason why 1 is containable and the other isn’t.
Because flu is now endemic across the entire world as it’s been around for centuries. WHO are hoping they can stop this before such a situation occurs.

Also he said this is “no worse that flu” and to correct him if he’s wrong.

Sky are reporting at the COBRA meeting today we will go into the delay stage which means closure of schools and the cancellation of large public events

I got told yesterday the plan up here in Scotland is for schools to close end of next week for 2 weeks which will then lead to the Easter break, a 4 week shutdown in effect.

Whether that is true or not waits to be seen?
