On the subject of working from home, I've been doing that for a while now and I've just finished pointing the house, I'm gonna rake it out and start again tomorrow

Unfortunately it will need to be employers, with encouragement from the government who will have to take the lead on this and take the decision out of their employees hands.
I agree I wish more would. I am supposed to be going to Germany next week and whilst Germany is not exactly Italy, nevertheless the idea of sitting on a packed plane for a hour or two is not filling me with enthusiasm. My employer has advised against non-essential travel, but what does that mean? The meeting is essential from a business perspective but not from a life or death perspective.

I wouldn’t go, personally.

But isn’t the 18% figure meaningless? Tests are being rationed so the number of confirmed cases is being artificially depressed.
There are question marks for sure, but whether it's meaningless I don't know. It's based on stats obtained on a consistent basis and it is talking about ratios not absolutes, so it could be an indicator. Now it is true that the % daily increase would also fall if the % of people being tested was also falling, so the next few days will be interesting.

I’m sure that’s the case. I trust the experts not the government. Our % increase may have fallen but so has the rate of testing from what I can understand. On a separate subject, maybe the modelling shows that the NHS will not cope irrespective of timing of lock down. I have heard absolutely no discussion about their contingency plans to increase the number of ICU beds, infrastructure and trained staff. If the government were being transparent shouldn’t we by now?

Every scenario I look at they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

Introduce draconian measures now, such as banning flights and some airlines go under.

Not banning things and it spreads more.

Enforcing a lockdown now and it will massively slow it down but in several weeks the population will rebel and it’ll spread again and they’ve lost that leverage.

Speak totally honestly and they’ll send people into panic, hide the truth and people get angry they’re not being honest and it’ll cause people not to take the measures themselves.

The government really are in a shit position and I think any decision they take, in any aspect of this, will cause negative consequences.

I get annoyed because people are using it to point score.

Are you accusing me of point scoring?

Can you not reschedule to go via the UK?

You can't travel from Europe but from what I've heard you can travel to the UK and then on to the US.

no the flights are scheduled out of Lisbon unfortunately as part of the package which we were told about in December. To be honest I’ve got other complications in the sense of my mums situation and her being in a high-risk category so it would’ve been odds on that I would’ve canceled either way even if trump hadn’t imposed the ban.

more gutted for the kids - Bloody Chinese have a lot to answer for!

It's really hard though when your employer isn't stepping up and leading by example. Ultimately they hold the most power in the relationship and they should be behaving responsibly and protecting their employees. If they say they're happy to send you there then it's kind of implicit what is expected of you. We do of course have the option as an individual to refuse but I think broadly speaking, it will be workplace culture which is dictated at senior level that plays a huge part in how this pans out.

No I am not.

It was a general point.
That’s good because I am absolutely not. From everything I have read, early intervention seems to work. Transparency re contingency plans could reassure but only if they are robust. We won’t have long to wait to see how this unfolds, please god all of us are still here to argue about it afterwards.

Thank-you. Spot on.

My wife has just asked the question, what about your travel insurance???

Agree with all that.

The messaging needs to be consistent though. Johnson saying he's going to carry on shaking hands is pretty stupid when the general message is to avoid social interactions where possible.
