Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

Sure we were favourites for the chumps league at the start of the season,so it should be given to us.
For a season and then adjust the next season or 2.

4 extra games per PL team. Maybe increase the squad size to allow for this. Start earlier, cancel the league cup, end later, force clubs to play x% youth players etc.

I know its Liverpool but I think so far into the season its unfair to void it and behind closed doors isnt fair on the players.
Unfair!!!....The club accused of hacking into the City scouting system and doing everything possible to see us excluded from European football. I'd say it would be nothing less than totally deserved karma.

My solution.

1) Cancel the league
2) Award the dippers the title. Annoying but fair, really.
3) Nobody relegated
4) Euro slots is the difficult bit, clubs will moan one way or the other, it might have to be based on what the positions are based on every team having played each other once
5) Next season, plan on two regional leagues to reduce games because there's a chance this virus could re-appear in winter if there's no vaccine in the mean time.

God knows what the championship and leagues below do.
No man, nobody gets awarded anything, you win it or you don’t.

We didn’t stop playing when we were staring into the abyss 2-1 down in the 90th minute against QPR and award the title to united.

Point 2) They haven't won it until they've won it mathematically - cue the PL to bring Liverpool's easiest two home games forward to next Saturday & Sunday.

Are you being serious??

Of course not. Just a joke about City cancelling and arranging games at late notice. I have booked four days holiday to make the Burnley and Madrid matches so desperate they go ahead, particularly as last time I made the trip was for the cancelled West Ham match. If they cancel the Wilmslow half marathon on sunday that really would be the icing on the cake.

You cannot award the title nor relegate sides with games to play and nothing mathematically certain you just cant.

They either play behind closed doors and face the backlash from clubs and players or they halt the season and hope to restart it or they abandon and no one wins or goes down from any league in the country.

I know, I know. Just not sure I could cope with the high-pitched squeal we'll get for decades if the season is dumped. Another way would be to do as above but finish this season in August-October and then run the regional idea. The problem with that, I've mentioned this before, is some clubs could say that they will be disadvantaged due to players being out of contract etc, etc.

Regarding this streaming nonsense when potentially playing games behind closed doors, anyone actually thought about those that don’t have wi-fi at home or limited internet access? How they going to watch, my good friend whom I bring to games is 84, hasn’t got any of the trappings we take for granted today as can’t afford them and doesn’t want them anyway. Where’s he going to watch the game, can’t come to mine, or watch with groups in a pub?

Some politicians apparently think that if they cancel big sporting events it will free up resources for the emergency services

Look at these scenes outside PSG. They might as well have played the game

Sadly I think the rest of the season, or large proportion, will be played by closed doors. If the euros were not being staged they may have been a bit of wiggle room to extend the season, but sadly this year that is not the case.

Hopefully the major finals can go ahead but I am not overly optimistic.

So a Juve player tested positive. I think it’s game over now. I would expect all sporting activities to be canceled in the next few days across Europe. Just my opinion though.
Juve cannot possibly play Lyon next Wednesday as the club will surely be self isolating. On that basis the round of 16 cannot be completed therefore our game should be postponed rather than be behind closed doors

It is pretty difficult to please everyone, even worse in times of a national/international emergency. Radio will still work.

To answer the original question (and this is only my opinion), I would not be surprised to see it played behind closed doors, but expect a cancellation.

Behind closed doors would also need to be backed up by a ban on pubs showing games to be effective in even slowing down infection speed.

There is a much greater risk of contact with the virus in an enclosed space (a pub) than an open stadium, and this is understood generally.

So I think it’s likely that given it’s Tuesday for the game, my gut tells me it’s a cancellation. I will say for sure that they don’t want 3k Spaniards travelling over yet again.

I fail to see how it can even be played behind closed doors.

Look at Juve and Arsenal, 14 day quarentine because Rugani has it (Juve) and because they met someone who has it (Arse). Players and coaches are going to start contracting it and then whole teams will be locked down for 2 weeks. Think we're just copying Italy here, behind closed doors for a week or so and then postpone/cancel when we realise shit has hit the fan.
