Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

There was a growing mood of anger last night among clubs and players that the Premier League appeared likely to continue despite the coronavirus crisis being declared a pandemic. [@TeleFootball]

PL Statement: "In light of Mikel Arteta testing positive for COVID-19, the Premier League will convene an emergency club meeting tomorrow morning regarding future fixtures. The Premier League will make no further comment until after that meeting."

i think the FA are desperate to at least get the next two rounds done so liverpool can officialy win it,its complete madness

this is what is going to happen! It’s all everyone seems to talk about on the issue. What about promotion, relegation, the Rays returning to the prestigious champions league?!

Behind a pay wall but a lot of the PL clubs aren't happy with the Premier Leagues original decision (looks set to change tomorrow, assuming thats what the meeting is about), even without the Arteta news some may have refused to play:

The players want to get a grip of their union and tell them they're not having it, if it was in a factory or some other place that has union they would soon call them out en-bloc.

This is it in a nutshell. I guess the players are a bit removed from reality due to still picking up mega bucks whether they play or not. I have heard players in Spain have expressed serious concerns as they don't want to catch it and pass it onto elderly relatives.

Does Boris Johnson think he knows better than everyone else in Europe. They have suspended the leagues in Italy, Portugal, Spain and Holland which is the right thing to do. The whole thing is going to get much worse as each day passes. What is the point in trying to get one more game in at the weekend before, most probably, a full suspension is initiated next week.

Boris knows what he’s doing, he’s put the decisions into the hands of the FA and Premier League so no claim can come back on the government!
I totally agree with his decision at this moment.
But it does show what utter kuntz the FA and Premier League are, when the whole of the worlds sports governing organisations, have on mass cancelled all sporting activity’s.

I hope they all walk alone for the rest of their miserable lives!

Think theres more chance of catching it at work or at the pub than there is at a game so I will be there.Just be careful thats all.

People still going out at night and working, footballs least of our worries.

Would love the league to cancel but thats never going to happen if its Liverpool.
It’s getting to games or any mass events, on public transport that’s packed, that is the real problem.
You have a packed tram to the Etihad full of hard surfaces that people hang on to, that this virus can survive on for up to two days. So it’s not just the close proximity of people.

Whatever measures are taken by any government one thing that is coming out loud and clear over here is that for anything to work it’ll take a great deal of social compliance to the recommendations.

If there isn’t then the recommendations will become directives as the situation deteriorates.

I’m getting the impression over here that they are prepping us for the fact that this is going to extend past March 29th, and they are expecting this to get worse.

The idea of these measures now is the hope that the inevitable increase in cases will not be a steep a peak and emergency health services will cope better.

It’s a tough one to get the sweet spot of the right measures at the right time but it’s a collective action problem.
You need a collective action strategy that all will buy into.
To do that you need to convince people that the actions no matter how harsh are for their good. It is the correct action.
You also need to convince people we are all in this together. Community. Let’s pull together and we’ll get through this.
You also then need a level of social disapproval. Wash your hands you dirty bastard. Your actions or inaction have consequences for other people.

The major sporting bodies and each country‘s government need to ask have the public bought into whatever strategy they are pushing.

So you agree with his decisions (despite doing the opposite of most nations) yet criticising the fa and premier league for not following other sports? Can’t have it both ways, Boris is a tit and wrong and so is the fa and premier league

Quick question. If perchance the Dippers can cram in enough games to win it and others like Arsenal and possibly Leicester cannot fulfil their matches can a Champion be declared?

id rather city walk the ball into the net v Burnley and the next game just to put this shambles to bed,,lives are being lost and its going to get a whole lot worse and all the bloody FA can think about is the product 'THE PREMIERSHIP' its disgusting
