I suppose being optimistic doesn't change facts. Quite bold (not sure if right word) of him to delay everything when every other country seems to be shutting down.
I have political views on this but I'll save them for the politics forum. I sort of get the science behind it, but find it hard to accept that we are apparently the only country that have clever enough scientists and politicians to get this right. Seems strange that if our stated aim is to delay the virus, then why are we in actual fact delaying the robust measures that would assist in this? Only time will tell if a decision has been made to prioritise the economy over public health. It is of course very desirable to keep the economy from tanking, but doubt it will cheer me up much as I watch loved ones die and attend funerals. Still, leadership is about tough decisions, and it appears they have been made with more possibly to come.

So now they’ve decided to ban all gatherings over 500 from next week.
Making it up on the hoof.

what about schools with more than 500 pupils?

100% this. No fucking idea. The preposterous suggestion that you could reduce a forthcoming peak by not bothering to introduce measures now, was patently ludicrous. I don't who came up with that daft idea and what they were smoking but other daft twats unfortunately went along with it. Hopefully they are starting to see sense.

She's had it for over a week and not had a fever at any point, she's pretty much on the mend tbh but her lungs get shitty every time she gets a cold. I guess I'll find out tomorrow when she rings them, but it'll be annoying if we get told to isolate as it's blatantly not the virus.
Yeah it’s a ball ache mate sounds like she may not of had it but I’m no expert although your wife has underlying issues so just be extra careful and see what happens when you/her ring them ..

making kids stay at school is not what other countries are doing, not that i know of,we are going kamakarzi for some reason

It's because kids out of school need looking after, whether it be grandparents (not a good idea) or if you work in the NHS and have no other option the work force starts to demise and believe me at this time it defiantly isn't a good idea ...

In a nutshell.

Surely he must feel whatever he is doing is for the best. Does anyone really know what the best thing to do is? Is there evidence that shutdown is working in other countries, or is it too early to tell?

I'm no big fan of Boris, just trying to understand.
he is allowing the advisors to push him down a path very different to what other countries are doing and against the WHO advice, the WHO guy was at great pains to say they are very worried about some countries inaction, they want this shut down and not some waffle about a plan to get herd immunity which involves exposure an d figures of 60% of the population needing to get it

I’m not for one minute saying it’s the right decision, but one of the theories I’ve heard about keeping the schools open is that if they all shut down many parents would have to take leave from work, and a fair chunk of those parents will work for the NHS which would mean less hospital staff to treat those with coronavirus.

That was exactly the biggest concern in Germany and virologists agreed - til yesterday.
Now the schools are closed.

But the teachers will still be there and parents who can't find a solution can bring their kids,
but many will find a way to keep the little transmitters at home ;)

It should add a bit and at the same time keep national and esp. medical infrastructure working. Hopefully.

From what I gathered listening to the press conference, it's much more effective to initiate shutting everything down when cases are at there peak. But it does seem like a serious gamble.

Like you say, it's much more desirable to save loved ones than the economy, and only time will tell if the politicians think the same.

I'm sure this is all part of their carefully timed plan and isn't a u turn at all. I have seen the details on the back of a fag packet. BLAG IT

I think we should take the stance the rest have, and take action now. Then have the herd theory as a plan B.

I'm in Andalucia and was worried that unlike northern Spain schools were still open.

Andalucia has a population of around 8 million, so bigger than many countries,no fatalities but the government in Seville closed all schools as of today. The streets outside are incredibly quiet compared to a normal Friday evening.
Can't understand why the UK is not acting in a similar fashion.

same here on the decent side of the peninsula ;-) was dead out tonight can’t remember ever coming back this early on a Friday night - was talk they might close the border to Andalusia - never trust an Andalusian as the Algarvians say

I understand that, but it's almost like we are ushering in the peak rather than trying to flatten it which is what the NHS needs to cope. The only advantage I can see in causing a quick sharp peak is that the timeframe for economic disruption may be lessened. A quick peak has it pretty much done by June, but delay could drag the closures of workplaces, schools sports etc on all year. The disadvantage is that the NHS will be overwhelmed by a sharp peak and we say good bye to a lot more of our elderly/at risk relatives for the sake of UK plc.

Jaja. Wasn't aware of that saying.

That's a terrible slight, on pot-heads.
They are not closing schools at present. That will be a later step no doubt.
Two weeks before Easter, maybe?
