COVID-19 — Coronavirus

So the available data has so drastically deviated from expected trends today as to lead them to introduce measures they indicated would be saved until the right moment... yesterday.

This is no reflection on you specifically, but speaking as a data scientist, in the technical language common to my field...

That is ****ing unlikely.
I do wonder if there’s something to this behavioural science stuff though? From what I can gather, today has seen very few people in railway stations, on the tube, at museums and the like and going into work. So, whilst they’ve ‘done nothing’ things are seemingly ‘being done’. Getting people to take responsibility for this is always going to engender a more positive response than imposition.
I haven’t ventured out tonight but I wonder if it is a typical Friday night out there?

It very much seems a reactive — rather than a proactive — action, even though they claimed their strategy was the latter sort yesterday.

Not sure to be honest. If it was purely reactive, then I would have expected it to come in pretty much straight away. Either way, I don't much care if it is the right decision.

Or maybe they have data today that indicates it's the right time. They said they would be reviewing everything on a day by day basis.
There is no good data though. It’s guesswork. Nobody knows the number of infected, and nobody ever will. So to create a strategy that relies on precise timing when you have no way of knowing when the right time is, is farcical. It’s shambolic. The data is not accurate enough, or is too hard to obtain (we’re not going to test millions), to do anything other than an immediate response. Which we didn’t do.

Nonsense. They said yesterday the time is not right. Then all of a sudden, today it is? That’s not part of a plan, that’s an admission that he is driving us into a national disaster of epic proportions and a hasty attempt to put it right. But it’s likely too late. He’s a fucking dick.
Absolutely no question about that.
The cabal around him are incompetents and in a time of crisis we deserve better.

I am getting confused somewhat with all this. They want us to get it at a controlled pace hence them not locking things down now. When it really starts to spike they will introduce harsher measures to try and control the pace at which it spreads to help the nhs try to cope with the frankly scary numbers.

I totally get how total lockdown won’t work.

Allegedly one man in China started this so what’s to stop it going again in China unless every single person is eradicated of the disease once things get back to normal? The tens or hundreds who still have it will make it start back up again? This surely has to be the case unless a vaccine in places like
China is found. It will just re start surely?

Can see where the government is coming from. If as many over 75s as possible simply self isiolate until we hit 60 percent (Assuming this herding thing is correct) then they can’t catch it the same once they stop isolating? So if I was 75 I would stay in My house for 6 months.

Only go home now if I have new persistent cough or fever of 37.8
Irrelevant if I have had contact with known covid positive. I stay in work until cough or fever starts

I would imagine that if you know you have been in close contact with somebody who has tested positive, then it would be sensible to self-isolate. If you have the symptoms you mention, then you also self-isolate.

And much more, he drove himself into a weak position - in the admittedly biggest UK crisis since what know I.

He bottled the chance to be proactive and show his nation and many unsettled people
that they can rely on him and his team of experts.

Now he looks like a fool, his nation is not on board but discussing his strategy
and he has a lot to do to repair this loss of faith in his leadership.

My drive to work today at 6am (30 miles in the home counties) was like a Sunday morning, I live next to a commuter station into London, the car park this whole week has looked similar to what it does between christmas and new year.

I don't think that has anything to do with yesterday's Press Conference, just people looking after themselves.

I asked purely because you think our existing strategy is on the poor side.
Personally I'm happy for it to play it's course and have been even before yesterdays announcement. I'm in the cautious, not constrictive camp.
Well, in answer to your original question then of course I would rather be here, given this is where my family, friends and work are. That doesn’t make the government immune from criticism though. Personally, I’m apprehensive about letting it “play its course”.

Not sure there has been a loss of faith to be honest. On the news this evening I saw a poll that indicate that twice as many were happy with what he was doing than those who thought he was wrong.

I think there are reasons to be apprehensive about both the lockdown route and our route.

Not yesterday’s press conference I agree, but the messages are obviously getting out.

People are more clued up these days and dont fully trust the so called experts and definitely politicians advising them. Years ago the majority would have blindly followed every word they said, not anymore.

You try telling my dad to stay in his flat for 6 months, he's 80, and has had heart treatment a few years ago, he's fitter now than I've ever been.

You can re catch it right? If so second time round must be even more dangerous I presume.
