I’ve just been sent this by a family member. Not sure how credible it is but I wouldn’t be surprised.....

“Listen guys, don’t mean to scare anybody and obviously don’t shoot the messenger but my friend is pretty high up in the police force and has been told via the home office we are going on lockdown as of next week. 2 weeks to start with she’s been told. She’s just rang me now. What we do with this is up to us but I’m passing it on regardless and if it doesn’t happen then we have lots of food to eat. xxxxxx”

I'd be amazed if they do. The reason clinical trials are so long now is because of the Thalidomide tragedy. In this case it was causing horrible birth defects in new borns, which obviously is a long term thing. The bodies that approve these kind of things are extremely cautious as they know its better to be safe than sorry in case it only makes matters worse.

Safety is paramount, there's a reason why most people don't expect a vaccine within 12 months. Still, I guess they know about this. Much depends on the situation in the autumn. If we control the epidemic sufficiently well, then it won't be urgent to deliver the vaccine already before Christmas. If the situation is really bad though, both in terms of human and economic costs, governments will be desperate to use the vaccine as soon as possible. Extraordinary circumstances may change the safety protocol.

And that’s how panic buying starts.

This.
I think we should trust the health authorities in major countries to have a good idea of what is acceptably low risk - when tests show that point has been reached, then they'll allow it to be used.

A lockdown isn’t scary.

It’s the safest this country will be.

Has there been any discussion as to why Italy's cases and deaths has escalated much quicker than the UK?

Up until the 19th Feb we had more cases then suddenly theirs has gone through the roof. Has our advice of constantly washing hands actually worked in keeping the spread down or is it just pure luck?

2 separate strains were mentioned at one point, has this now been debunked?

Those above 65 being sent home at our place, only allowed back when it's safe.

A fella I work with retires in 4 months so this could of been his last day..!

As far as i can gather China has a lot of business interests in Italy, especially the north so that is partly why. Add to that they were not very responsible when isolation and quarantine came into effect. Many travelled south to escape the quarantine measures as it was seen as an inconvenience, this, i suspect, exacerbated the threat of contagion.

The article explains that they will try to shorten the trials without compromising the safety of the vaccine. They'll try to deliver the vaccine in the autumn, I.e. before Christmas, so more like 9 months from now rather than 6. Would still be great if they do it. The boss of the company says it's possible, so it might be possible indeed.
they CAN'T skip any trials,it is regulated,it will not be done

25% of the Italian population is over 65, one of the oldest populations in the world.

This is totally off the top of my uneducated head...

I think they have a larger Chinese migrant population who all returned from new year at once.

They’re more touchy feely with greetings and families often live together, more than we do.

The north of Italy has many villages with the oldest population in Europe.

Their patient 1/0/whatever didn’t show symptoms for ages and infected dozens without knowing, which saw the spread start much quicker.

Add the above in and realise it’s a big case of bad luck and there you go.

@Uffa

Feel free to correct me or add to the above mate.
