They all run for one term anyway. Hasnt happened for several cycles but other candidates have run against incumbents from their own parties. Edward Kennedy did it in 1980 against Carter but I cant recall anyone seriously trying it since. Also, VPs have a very poor record of succeeding those they deputised for anyway. Gore failed, Nixon failed initially. Being VP doesnt mean you are the favourite to be the next nominee because it is such a wank job.
