It's only five months since the last letter circulated to other clubs by LFC urging the Premier League to take action against us in addition to the UEFA ban. It is no surprise to City. City know how the leaks came out of the UEFA investigation, how the computer hacking happened, all about the private briefings to media here in the UK and the US. The ongoing dirty tricks campaign by Liverpool Football Club is well established and goes back years. The club is pure poison.
So why do we accept 1m from them? Should‘ve taken it to court

The only reason I can think of is that we didn't want our own security failures exposed in public. The Liverpool hack was happening at roughly the same time as the Der Spiegel hack (no one knows the precise dates for this yet which may come out in the Pinto trial) I think both data breaches are unrelated but they don't exactly show City in a good light. Going to all-out war with Liverpool at that time didn't make sense. With hindsight that may have been a bad decision. Also our relations with LFC were not as bad then as they are now after the coach attack etc.

Would we get any more in damages than £1m. We'd have to prove their actions caused us damage, we'd probably get much less in a court case.

Would have embarrassed Liverpool (which would have been nice) but it wouldn't have affected us to much.

Daily Express saying city were surprised by Liverpool’s involvement.

I find this very hard to believe, anyone with any sense at all knows they’re very close to the heart of it

It's sarcasm on City's part, nothing more.

We know the main protagonists, always. This is basically getting those on the outside of all this to pose the question, 'Why would a team 25 points ahead wish to get involved?'

Do you think it's an American thing.

We must have thought they were no threat footballing wise and better to keep them on friendly terms than make an enemy. On the face of it, our actions seem incredibly short sighted.

i think the FA got involved as well as they like to not make a big thing of possible and try to work things out in private? @Prestwich_Blue might be able to confirm that?
