Peter Barnes

Peter and Gary were two massive heroes for me growing up. devastated when we let them go. I remember being sat in the Platt lane v WBA in that great away kit of green and yellow stripes. Gary was running full pelt and ended up in the first row sat with the fans.

I was there for that. Terrifically intelligent goal. If there was one thing Jennings was good at, it was blocking first time shots with his legs.

Reminds me of some banter i had with a spurs fan after we had lost at the lane...i was in a bitter mood...
Said to a gloating home supporter on a packed tube "remember when you were relegated from the 1st division?"
No mate, was the reply and looked surprised....i said incredulously " you dont know about your club being relegated? ..he again denied knowing..before my time
I switched tack and said " but you ve heard about your club legend Steve Perryman ?"
Oh yes came the reply,with a big smile on his face...
" Well he was your captain the season you went down!"
Even his own mates laughed out loud at him.
Job done.

I've met Peter Barnes and Tommy Booth at a function and what great, friendly guys they both are. Good craic between them, both down to earth and a good laugh. Peter agree is very modest indeed. Hope he's progressing well with his hip.
 
Wonderful player on his day. Pace, blonde flowing locks, great dribbling ability.

Ripped AC Milan apart at Maine Road in a UEFA cup game.

And made me very happy at Christmas with this.....

Jeez, that took me back. I remember reading the paper on the bus going into town about Barnes & Owen leaving and I shed a tear or two, not a good look for an 18 year old lad.

I've just checked and that Summer transfer window really was crap.

Spent a night in the cells for stealing (...well attempting to steal as I had it taken off me later...) an A1 sized photo of Peter sat in a pub, under a Guinness poster with the tag line "Pure Genius" from the opening night of one of those sports bar things down in Lundun in the late 90s, wish I'd got away with it 'cause it was a class picture. The shindig was full of sports journalists + me (got a free invite from a mate who used to write for shoot!) and chatted to Martin Samuels (who I'd never met before) for ages that night as well (prior to the attempted robbery) and he was a really properly nice down to earth guy.

The story was relayed to Peter himself when I found myself in a hospitality bar under the main stand at Maine Stand a few years later, and I was told that he wanted to talk to me about it, but I was kinda embarrassed by the whole affair and just mumbled "You got me arrested once mate", think he thought I was a bit of a lunatic to be honest.

Simila to Michael Johnson , Stephen Ireland, watching all three I would have said potential world beaters, none of them got there .

Think that was about the time I started going on the bus with friends and that game sticks in my mind more than any other from that time, don't know why, especially that Peter Barnes goal.
 
Just looked Peter Barnes up, and, bloody hell - he played for about 25 clubs in his career.
Was he at Chorlton Park Junior school, late '60's ?

Wasn’t he on the ground staff before he started playing. I am sure he made his debut at vile along with Paul Power. I also remember him saying he was nytid fan. The BIFFO’s love him.

One of the greatest goals to grace Maine Rd; it wasn't the last day of the season though. We played two more matches after it.

Peter Barnes has good taste - drinks Guinness. Tommy Booth, not so good. They are always propping up the bar at the Ardwick (or at least they were up to a month or so ago before the whole world bloody changed!). Not sure if they are meant to be there in an official capacity, just seemed to be sat at the end of the bar, and good on them!
