It truly is depressing to witness the state of democracy at the moment, especially in America. It’s hugely difficult to pinpoint the principal cause, but the diminishment of western hegemony, and the internal frustrations it gives rise to, is probably the main driver.
That a man so palpably poorly equipped for the task in hand even has a prospect of being re-elected is such a powerful indictment of a system that has become broken, a process that has, as you say, been aided and abetted by technology.
Nothing should be taken for granted, including the system itself. The vested interests to which you refer should be mindful of that. Things can unravel very quickly if the circumstances are correct.
