On a more serious note, my mother died in a care home on Wednesday, and I've heard an awful lot of ambulances driving around today. Thanks to everyone for making this such a decent place to hang out and deal with the pandmeic, it's helped me stay in a good frame of mind.
Sorry to hear that lovely, what is happpening is mental, this is a good community ,mostly, supportive

Can you actually confirm though that Italy aren't doing the same thing? Isn't it logical to just presume everyone is backlogging often due to the insane nature of what every country is going through? Why are they going to be doing any differently to us?

I also don't get how anyone can be annoyed at anyone for being upset at hearing about 900 deaths. It's not exactly not bleak is it ffs? Unless you think its totally fine?
Oh do fuck off you neck beard. I saw your post before the edit accusing me of lacking empathy.

It’s nothing of the sort, my post was simply explaining for the hard of thinking that it’s impossible to compare daily death figures between different countries when the U.K. (for example) keeps adding in non-hospital deaths for a previous one to two week period to any figures released on the day they were determined.

The numbers are collated as such due to the fact that non-hospital deaths require two separate GP’s to see the body and sign the death certificate. It means that numbers aren’t available in real time.

As for “why the U.K. would be different to Italy”, the U.K. hasn’t taken a single ventilator away from a older patient to give it to a younger one (yet). Our health service has not yet reached capacity.

So you can keep posting about everything is bleak and blame the government if that’s your way of dealing with it. Other posters can however, realise it’s a shite situation and yet still come to rational view that no amount of finger pointing or asserting blame will make a difference.

If you’re wanting to win the badge for the most upset and most depressed by the situation then have at it.

The Govt are looking into forging medals for everyone involved in the Falklands as a way of boosting public morale. In order to qualify, you must publicly state your belief that there was clearly nothing more than pure chance involved in the number plate 1984 FKL ending up on Jeremy Clarkson's car as they filmed him driving around southern Argentina winding the locals up.
Didn’t the Falklands War start and end in 1982?

So sorry for you loss bud. Went though the same in February with my Dad. Stay strong.

Why are comparing with spain at all? We govern by consent here and we had to be asked very politely at the start and not told,we will never have a harder lockdown
Agree Karen, in Spain almost immediately the government took control of police, army and commercial finance so could maake its decisions immediately.
In UK most needed HOC agreement to emergency laws so took time to enforce new Bills.
Easy to blame a soft approach by Boris but part of it was the price of maintaining democracy I feel.

It's a mix, isn't it. It's easy to get your back up from something someone says one day that doesn't matter the next. Being able to go through that when talking about these issues seems to have been pretty healthy, it's good to remember that it's rarely worth getting too worked up about one moment or argument, because there'll be different ones tomorrow, and the day after.

Big shout for Bluebell Nursing Home in Salford for me tonight.
It's my mum's birthday today (74) and although we were estranged for many years because of her mental illness from being a young mum, we have built bridges in the last 4 years.
She didn't know it was her birthday but when she came to the phone and I wished her happy birthday she then turned round and told the care staff. They then proceeded to sing happy birthday to her, and one of the staff then came back on the phone to say my mum's beam of a smile had been the best thing they had seen all day.
Fantastic staff.
And just to add....she is physically very good and mobile. She has had breast cancer but is in recovery. Her smile can be either angelic or something else (that's schizophrenia for you) but she has always been extremely intelligent.
The staff there are mostly immigrants and wonderful. Never a bad or harsh word with any of the residents.
I wanted to cry when I heard them sing happy birthday to her.

Some people are pointing out that the care homes are almost working as an extension of the NHS during this. But they don't get access to the resources, or as much love from the public, or attention in the press.

In East London they have decided to open the large park near me from Saturday. Not sure what idiotic negligent person decided that, but it's a recipe for disaster. They have left a list of strong guidlines

Reduced opening hours from 8am to 4pm, daily
Only exercise outdoors once a day - such as a run or walk, alone or with other people from your household
Leisure cycling is only allowed for children under the age of 12 who are accompanied by an adult
Exercise = keep moving → get home, stay at home
No gatherings, sunbathing, picnics or sport games
Stay two metres away from other visitors at all times
Use of playgrounds, toilets, gym equipment and benches is prohibited
Give way to people exiting the park
Keep left on pathways and avoid narrow ones
Keep dogs on a lead and on the grass, where possible
Treat staff, police and others with respect
Anyone who enters Victoria Park when it is locked does so at their own risk

At what point does it just become pointless to open it at all?

you must live near me! couldn't believe that when i read it this morning.

True,we are lucky to have a few threads that can help people get through stuff and of course this more factual one that we can agree/disagree on,for anything that has gone before with posters doesn't matter to me,unless they insist on carrying it on

I think the plan was wrong, but that is for another thread
As I said, part of the problem. Certainly something needed to be done and maybe initially the boffins were wrong but like lockdown perhaps not 100 percent the answer but part way there.
Masks, only 80 percent effective which is 80 percent more than without one.
Watching and waiting can have dire consequences for some illnesses.

Cheers for the insult. I edited it out immediately because I felt bad and thought it was harsh. I lost my temper briefly. And besides, asking someone if they lack empathy, and then quickly retracting it isn't exactly total bellend behaviour is it? I think it's pretty understandable that many people feel very fed up and may lose their tempers. Today I learned an auntie of mine is intensive care in Wales due to this, and an uncle of mine likely has coronavirus closer to home, who lives with my auntie with diabetes who is high risk. My parents are terrified. Add to that that my missus has been furloughed today with her job at risk. Yeah well, I'm pretty fucking fed up, and I can imagine a lot are going through very similar things.

And yes, I don't think our government's response has been perfect. So fucking what? I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that either. If people are allowed to vehemently defend the government's strategy, people are also allowed to disagree just as passionately. I agree finger pointing won't make a difference right now, but people have every fucking right to vent and yes things ARE fucking bleak. How can anyone possibly say that it isn't? There's levels of bleak, yes, but it's all still on the same shite scale. I think its quite a normal reaction to find Vallance say that our death totals will rise for two more weeks, despite the already very high numbers, as totally fucking crap. How can anyone be okay with that?

And the worry is that despite not being short of ventilators yet, we're still posting deaths at the same rate as Italy. STILL. That's not exactly encouraging is it? We're matching them at their worst, without being overstretched. Unless im missing something here, and this is a sincere question, what positives are there to take from that?

You can be rational about it all and still totally fed up with it. There's a pretty strong argument to suggest the rational thing to feel right now is hopelessly lost. I know people like yourself probably think people like me are fucking wimps or sumat, but so fucking what? It isn't a good time, and maybe you should be a bit more understanding that people struggle with awful shit like this, understandably!
