The graph of death at the end of the briefings is very obviously Total Deaths per country but it loses a bit of meaning given the USA and Germany's population. I can imagine half the country thinking the UK is doing pretty average. The UK has comparable records to Spain and Italy but these countries are the worst affected in the world.

Apart from the very low mortality rate, absolutely.

To be fair the best virus they could have created would of been one to keep the vast majority of their consumer base intact whilst causing short/mid term political/economic trauma to its main rival. China then takes the U.S on the chicane on the global stage ... not sure you can model that into a virus in a lab in China though.

currently below Spain, Italy, Belgium and France among major European countries.

we are three weeks behind italy and yet are wedded to their line exactly
Kind of depends where you start the line at10, 20, 50 or 100 deaths. The more deaths you chose the lower the UK is compared with Italy.
BTW Italy, like England, has yet to count deaths outside hospitals.

Good news that the big increase a lot were expecting from the Easter BH hasn't arrived.

Hopefully we've seen the worst of it now and next time we loosen the restrictions, people take it more seriously and the NHS and labs are better equipped so that the spread is a lot slower.

England very much IS counting deaths outside of hospital and I’ve no idea why you’d think they aren’t.

‘Dr Jenny Harries is then asked why the figure of deaths in the UK is higher than in many other countries.

She says there is a "difficulty understanding the differentiation".

While Germany stands out now, Dr Harries adds: "We need to be very clear and need to look back in 12 or 20 months' time" to get the full picture.

She says the media has focused on counting deaths in the UK but the "most useful statistic" is comparing the number of deaths in the same season in previous years to the death toll during the coronavirus outbreak.

"It is difficult to draw direct comparisons with other countries," she adds. "That is not an excuse but a fact."

I think the above quite an important point, there’s so many different factors at play for each country that simply comparing numbers is pretty basic & potentially misleading.

MERS is a perfect killing machine, but as it wipes out the host population it is an evolutionary dead end.
SARS is a bit better but it still kills too many hosts and becomes symptomatic too quickly.
