COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I have just watched a brilliant documentary about the flu pandemic in the USA 1918/19
I never knew until tonight that it actually started in The States. The politicians also said the same things that they were saying a couple of months ago. 102 years .
And many of the issues that arose at that time were due to very similar government/public mismanagement of the response.

I have been doing my own study of that pandemic (and a few epidemics) in an attempt to better understand what aided and hindered the various responses and better assess whether I am personally — and our governments collectively — making the correct decisions in response.

Agreed, governments have to be very careful with what they do and say. Saying this would be allowed the other day then going against it will be catastrophic for the mood of the public. It’s partly why I thought the UK fucked up early doors. They should have locked down quicker and harder and then after 2/3 weeks said people could go exercise. That way people feel like they’re being rewarded rather than being punished. The public here needed something to look forward to especially with the lock down already being extended well into May. They’ve properly fucked this up.
Completely agree — I have expounded on that from the beginning of the thread, as have a few others.

Unfortunately — perhaps *fortunately* in some minds — we were not consulted. ;-)

Disagree. They’ve treated us like adults and done the right thing allowing people some fresh air and exercise.

I don’t think they locked down at the wrong time either as I understand the NHS still has plenty of capacity.

Unfortunately for me, having to manage directly or indirectly systems for coping with the responses in the UK, Spain, and US — I think there are strong arguments that all of them made significant mistakes at various points. One of the bigger ones was the delays in response itself, not even counting some missteps in the way they implemented ‘lockdowns’.

I think the timing of the restrictions has been about right to be fair, there’s still the overwhelming agreement we need to stay under these measures for a few more weeks at least.

Unless your using existing previously proven

which we arn’t, there isn’t an existing tested proven Coronavirus vaccine. From what I’ve found there may have been some phase 1 tests at most.

there is a lot of research they are piggybacking on tho.

They've changed their minds already, kids will be allowed to go for one walk a day now. Good news, but I just hope no one abuses it. Or sells their kids :)

We'll agree to disagree.

Watched this a few months ago before all this broke out , really good documentary , like you Spanish flu gives you the impression it was from there , not a chicken farm in Kansas, the 1st guy who got it was put on a transport ship to Europe & they carried 100 dead off the ship in France , an eye opener & I remember thinking we’ve been lucky not to have to deal with something
Iike that ....and then .

Back then. No radio. No TV. No phone. No broadband. Just the newspapers and word of mouth.
Recently found out my great uncle, on my fathers side, succumbed to it, aged 2 years and 9 months in October 1918. Also found the only photo of the little lad. The thing with the flu was it didn't discriminate.
Two graves down was a woman aged 33 who'd died on the same day. It must've been brutal back then.

It would have still had plenty of capacity if they'd locked down earlier, and less admissions too, so not sure what the capacity thing has to do with it.

Sorry mate, don't know.

It was 174 on sky . Just titled influenza 1918.

Thanks very much and appreciated. It;s running again tonight at 23:00 and we shall watch it. Read lots of information on the Spanish Flu, as you do with time on your hands and a dreadful malady to behold.
