One thing is worryingly evident in all of this... People become compliant with government when placed in a state of fear and paranoia.

That’s interesting because Brittany ferries are not carrying lorry drivers.
It’s containers loaded on at one port and taken off at another.

Interesting, they are known as drops. I must double check but I am convinced they are taking drivers too. One a large ship there is plenty of room to social distance though.

Really good point.

No one has been more compliant than me (maybe Karen!), as I haven't seen a soul since early March, when my Mrs went abroad to care for her 82 year-old mum. So I'm going along with all the measures 100%.

However, it is interesting to look at contrarians like Peter Hitchens. Whatever you think of him, he is brave for piping up with his opposition. Most of the media have been shocking throughout this time - and well before. They went from 'Don't worry, it's only like the flu' to 'Why on earth didn't the government order 500 tons of kit months ago' in the space of about a week.

I also saw an interview with a very high up Swedish immunologist (right word?), who says lockdowns are the wrong way to go.

I'm not knocking any government for any steps taken. I honestly believe they're all doing what they think is for the best.

Stay well, all.

I'm wondering about football restarting.
If a reliable test and an effective vaccine are miraculously discovered before the end of June , why should professional footballers jump to the head of the queue ?
Surely NHS staff will receive these treatments first.
Surely essential workers would be near the front.
I'm sure that most of the country will receive these treatments before professional sports people.
The priority will be to get the economy back on track.
The uproar would be massive if they got first dibs.

Questions

Do you see the deaths in social care inevitable ? It is a vulnerable group,we are trying to help them

Witty, this is an age group and medical problems are a vulnerable group, the ONS data will be a underestimate but recorded covid deaths are "modest",sadly there will be a high number in this group,we are doing everything we can with testing and PPE

Oversees nurses are paying a surcharge to be here, can we waive their charges?,it is being looked at,we pay tribute to them

PPE,when will shortages be resolved? Whitty,it is very tight at the moment, close to the line,at a national level we are not under water ,there is local shortages still though, managing as best as possible,i check this all the time

Restrictions eased in may ? We go with the data no plans yet to share
Comeback question,we are not silly ,can you give us a roadmap like other countries ?
Have to get the evidence first and trying to stop a damaging second spike

Are you underusing the military, there are a lot on standby ? Deploying resources by skill levels, engineers etc first
Helping with pop up testing station
Do they have PPE ? Yes

Portland down have the antibody testing skills but no very good tests available yet, critical to get this info right

Advice on face masks ? SAGE are still looking at it,no change till we have their advice

To whitty, are their medical targets before easing lockdown?
Cannot allow the R to get above one,if it goes above it will spread quickly,we are going to live with this for a long time, keeping the number down is the minimun requirement, have to look a few factors to ease restrictions

Will uk people get vaccine first if it is discovered and made here ? The vaccine has to go into big trials then manufactured, not a straight foward question
No vaccine will be available in the next calendar year (whitty)we have other drugs we are testing in the meantime and social distancing

Contract tracing ? Boosting testing, looking at the app that is available, wider trackibg and tracing, that info will help us get key workers back to work, looking for areas that the virus is taking off again
Do you think people would use the app and what about those without smart phone given privacy issues? Yes think the public understand we have to use everything we can

Hmmmm - shop where wife works is out of With Deepest Sympathy cards - customer told her none of the supermarkets have them - card shops are't open of course but probably supports the the ONS figures where they calculated death outside hospital to come with the 40k estimate

I have been repeating it,finding a vaccine that works is only the beginning, the manufactoring and upscaling, putting it into the vials all take ages

Yes, we all know. It'll never not be hugely demotivating though hearing the scientists basically say 'everything is shit for an awful long time'. The confirmation is a sickener every time. He also basically just destroyed any hope we had dangled in front of us by Oxford Uni.
