COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Another day showing that the reproductive factor (Rn, originally R0) has flatlined with another 4,500+ new cases.
Surely even Whitty, Vallance and the other members of SAGE can now see the truth of it?
They’re the wrong scientists now. You need a different mix when looking at coming out than you do for going in or the narrative will never change.

I'd agree. The case numbers of new infections are barely dropping now which isn't good. To drop the new infections further it would mean even tighter restrictions and that's probably not doable at this stage.
Aren’t we testing more, we were getting 5- 6000 positive when we were only testing those in hospitals, now hospital admissions are falling we must be testing many more outside hospitals and are getting 4-5000 positive so it doesn't necessarily mean infections aren’t falling. The raw number isn’t enough information to judge it with.

Big news from New York.

They've done their State-wide antibody survey. 14.9% statewide have antibodies which rises to 21.9% in New York City.

The Death Rate from Covid is 0.5% based on US antibody data (includes hospitals and nursing homes but excludes other Covid deaths)

I believe if you have recently been infected you don't produce antibodies. On the basis of that what do you do? It's actually a much much bigger number than I expected. Is it accurate? if it is, is herd immunity realistic given the wave has been and gone? Perhaps it is.

It certainly make the UK government strategy of sustained infection a little more credible in my eyes. I don't know what to think now. Perhaps just digest the news. I think it's good news to be honest. It means that there could be a way out without a vaccine but it will take a long long time.
It's excellent news.

Just had an email from work. They are taking part in the government’s ‘UK Coronavirus Testing Programme’. Home testing kits available for all our key workers and any members of their household displaying symptoms.

You can order up to 5 kits if you have that many in your house. If you are isolating, work pass on your details to the testing administrators, they they send an email with a link to order the testing kit via an online portal, delivered next day via Amazon. In the email you also book a time for Royal Mail to come to your house and collect the completed test. Results back within 72 hours.

Medical

Social distancing has been successful, transmission is way down

New cases, tested positive only leveled off or down in every area

Critical care patients,downward trend

Daily deaths in hospital, levelled off but not coming down enough yet

I've no idea what that was in Levenshulme. Only guessing it's from today/this week without thoroughly checking). Big Irish area but it's St. George's day. Was hoping someone from the area could confirm is all...

Still, that anti-bodies news is interesting...this thread is now more positive than the 'Positive Corona Virus Thread'!

Can imagine the density in new York city in particular is insane compared to most places? Basically everyone uses the subway too and they're filthy. Crammed as well. I'd guess they're an outlier compared to most places. No way it'd spread as quickly in basically everywhere apart from london in the uk.

What the fuck is that hair about?

Shave it off pal, you look a right fucking tool!

Briefing

Lots more on testing

Negative results from swabs do not mean you are completely clear, blood tests better more accurate results

No certainty on immunity yet

I posted that thread from the virologist recently re testing. Really interesting read (how testing positive or negative might not actually mean that, or testing positive only to be struck down by the virus for a second time may not be likely).

Definitely worth a follow:

Existing blood tests for antibodies and other uses are not being used by any country in the world to give individual advice as not accurate enough but can be used in surveys to get a picture

Immunity not guarnteed as yet

We are developing our own tests
