COVID-19 — Coronavirus

It's entirely inline with their thinking. They've never intended to suppress this fully, only delay it. 'Squash the sombrero', not trim it. Herd immunity. I never said a huge leap in cases either, I said a rise. Almost certainly there will be a rise if thousands and thousands of people start going back to work.

how do they suppress it fully?

i'm not saying Cheltenham Festival isn't the cause of covid infections in that area, but i would be interested to see how these GL postcodes stack up against other postcodes in the UK in terms of cases per head. Plus also the spike in cases in north Cheltenham contains the train station etc, where people would gather to travel to Gloucester etc for work.

i think it's difficult to ascribe that apparent spike in cases without knowing how they fit into the national picture. Plus the south wales spike in March/early April could have travelled east to GL postcodes (or indeed west from Cheltenham!).

Without data it's very difficult to claim a position of correctness.

It's not conclusive but it's the beginning of some data that shows what youd expect if it was a mass spread event.

When this is all over we will have definitive numbers for how many got infected at cheltenham and how many got infected from them. You can forensicly track this because the virus changes slightly in every person.

Look at the ski resort in Austria where they covered up the coronavirus outbreak and the authorites traced it back to them by testing every person infected and working out they had virus related to each other, taking their histories and realising theyd been at the resort.

That will happen with cheltenham, anfield, everything.

That’s a bold call - government will be listening to a whole body of experts on this and wouldn’t ease restrictions if it looked like a huge jump in cases would happen.

Hancock's just been interviewed on Radio 4 and pretty much confirmed this, and while he didn't really touch on the topic of businesses reopening specifically and which ones, he was definitely erring on the side of caution with regards to when lockdown measures would be lifted, saying that while he accepts the economy is important the safety of the people is paramount. This was despite the interviewer constantly interrupting him and if anything she was criticising him for being over-cautious and not giving clear answers about the exit. He said that they have done this in the form of the 5 step plan announced last Thursday but it's not possible at this stage to give precise details.

Although he didn't come across fantastically well, I don't think there was much wrong with what he said and if anything, he was endorsing an overly cautious approach rather than a reckless one. Now I'm sorry if that doesn't suit the narrative of those on here who think the government wants every fucker to die from this but there you go.

yes, i wonder how much data they will release as well? it feels incredibly wrong to be interested in this whole thing, while people are suffering, but i cant help it.

the Anfield thing was especially baffling at the time (and still is) as a good section of the crowd came from somewhere in lockdown, amazing.

when there is an eventual inquiry into this looking back, the flight policy of the country during this will get an absolute hammering.

yep good post, too many desperately trying to vent anger at Government on this

Forgive me for not remembering your posts word for word a whole month later. I remembered the jist, potentially incorrectly. If so, I apologise... and no I can't be arsed to scroll all the way back. I'll just take your word for it! Ha.

Don't apologise, he's deluding himself.

I tried telling him this 10 times but he's not having it. I gave up in the end. He seems to think that because we no spike in the local data, then that is proof that Cheltenham didn't cause a big problem. He fails to contemplate the possibility that it did, but that the people dispersed and the increased infections are lost in the noise, with simply a highly level of overall infection across the country than there otherwise would have been.

I just don't want anymore relatives of mine to die from this prematurely. We're far, far, far from past this. We're barely even past the peak, and it seems incredibly early. In 2/3 weeks from now I'd wager we'll start a rise in cases again leading to thousands more deaths. Can't wait.

in your evaluation do you have any contemplation or sympathy for the other side of this and it’s impact on relatives of others ?

millions and millions unemployed
Businesses bust
Suicides rocketing
Homelessness increasing
Depression and mental illness
Drugs and alcohol abuse
Poverty , not just poverty but actual hunger and no food for families
Education of youngsters , a basic right stopped for how long a year two years?
Domestic violence
Increase in crime and public disorder
Future generations saddled with masses of debt for years and years the longer this goes on.
Serious illnesses , far more serious than Covid like cancer not being treated as all the focus is on Covid. That will have an impact and come through in significant deaths.
People who have worked hard to go to university and saddled themselves with debt to do so having their autumn job offers revoked thousands of them every day. No jobs
No money for the nhs or public support or care of our elderly as we as a country have have no money.
Let alone softer things like meeting friends, socialising , getting married and all the things we took for granted .

it’s all about balance. The peak was between 8 and 12 April btw .

Of course I fucking do. Do you think I'm some heartless bastard? I'm not asking for many months of extra lockdown btw, I just think Hancock's messaging is dangerously vague.

if you and any of your relatives are worried about dying of Covid you can of course be more strict than the govt. just because the government eases the lockdown restrictions , which they aren’t going to do until May and even then gradually and slowly , you don’t have to go outside.

you or anyone can of course choose freely to stay in your house or indeed a room in your house and have no interaction whatsoever with anyone until a vaccine is found . You should be fine then.

my wife can’t leave the house for any reason until July 10 (we had a letter telling us ) as vulnerable which means I pretty much can’t either but I am hopeful by then some normality will have returned and lockdowns eased for the rest of society . It’s very important.

I can’t think of a single country on the planet that has or is even contemplating locking people down for 6 months or more.

They'll be dragged back into work regardless of their fears or not. They don't have any notable savings so they have no choice. Sacked and no job market, or go to work and risk death! Great stuff. Also, I never mentioned 6 months of lockdown, so don't put words into my mouth, or make it out like that that was my train of thought.

Are you fucking serious?

Because nearly every country has been in lockdown.

Honestly, I worry that everyone has the same amount of voting power as everyone else.

You do realise it`s this bloke your trying to talk sense into

Manchester’s region consisting of the densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing. It’s a larger area than Gtr Manchester (although there are actually small parts of Gtr Mcr that aren’t in the Manchester Metropolitan Area).
right...never heard of it before...cheers

Especially mad when the scientific research suggested that a travel ban would delay the peak by approximately 2 months.

Some might say that'd be enough time to learn far more about the virus - and get closer to a vaccine, build up pandemic supplies that there's been a fatal shortage of, and build up the infrastructure to implement a contact tracing strategy.

Insane decision that flew in the face of the science.

The South Wales spike can possibly be attributed to the ludicrous decision to go ahead with two sell out Stereophonics gigs that went ahead despite the rugby international being called off

Mixed messages can work- majority of our population will understand and that each circumstance is different for the individual.
We’re not the American trump fans that will all be camped out our MPs house demanding everything to reopen based on Hancock’s words this morning.
Are you saying the mixed messages are deliberate? I fear they are.
