Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I am sure it is not impossible to construct and carry out a safe training programme at their place of work.
At the City training ground for example, there are many changing facilities. Lots of space. The players could be trained in shifts, 2 hour slots would be plenty. Some could work inside others outside. Fitness training would not be a problem to do it safely.
The main issues, would be treating injuries, massage treatments and the such.
If the government ease some restrictions on the 7th may, then I am sure football and other industries will alter their plans .

How do you go about simulating match play? I can't see that falling within 'safe' practice!

The subterfuge used to try and gain support ("It will lift the nation" and "This will be a lifeline to the smaller clubs") for continuing with the season is all rather unedifying. This is purely down to the self-interest of some football clubs, sports broadcasters, the press (who seem to think it will lead to more clicks to their websites and people buying more papers) and the fans of certain clubs. I will certainly will not be watching any PL match whilst the crisis continues. It is clear who is pushing this agenda as there are rarely any references to the importance of continuing with the FA Cup and Champions League, 'otherwise it would be a disaster for football'.

I have no issue with Leeds United, but due to the arrogance of their fans ("If the season is void this is a travesty as we were dead certs to get promoted. We will take legal action as it is unfair" - in the context of thousands of people dying each week), I genuinely hope they miss out.

With the amount of lobbying via the press, especially in the last week or so, this could be due to some parties wanting the season voiding. Maybe some clubs and possibly a significant number of players. You can understand the players having an issue with it. For example, De Bruyne's missus is heavily pregnant. During a pandemic, I doubt he would want to go to the training ground or play matches and then return home to the family. I also doubt he would want to be separated for them for several weeks.

Another thing that has irritated me....players were under a lot of pressure to make a financial contribution. Unfairly so, in my view. Now they are potentially being asked to accept health risks to themselves and their families in order to 'lift the nation'. If I was a footballer, my reaction to being asked to play would be to tell the football authorities authorities to stick it.

How can you change the rules part way through a season!... 5 subs being discussed, this gives an advantage to teams with bigger squads. Also neutral grounds should not be a consideration... Null and void is the only answer.

We keep being told the single most important thing we can do is to socailly distance, this is not only impossible on a football pitch but now we may allow each side to have 5 subs meaning an additional 4 players every game could be involved.

It's all fucked up.

I love how they are saying it will lift the nations mood! Ha ha. Men maybe but the majority of women? I doubt it.

Can just imagine those discussions.

“You can deal with our highly anxious and emotional kids today love because there are 5 live games on sky back to back”

The money grabbing nature of the premier league machine is in full display here. This season is never going to be considered legitimate regardless of whether they finish it or not now. Let’s say they do get games on late May/June behind closed doors as planned. Firstly no fans makes it nothing but a business choice and not a football decision so any claim is for the legitimacy of the game is total and utter bullshit. and then the overflow into next season is going to ruin that too. They’ll be a limited pre season and whilst they’ve had a good rest now and won’t impact them immediately it’s going to catch up with them further down the line, next season will have to flow into the summer when they’ll be a euro’s to play too and then the following season is when schedules will be squashed to accommodate the ridiculous winter World Cup. Finishing this season basically means players get no rest and major disruption for the next 3 years.
