Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

This morning I saw another report of the idea of completing our domestic season abroad. The fact this could even be touted, however remote, shows we really are in danger of this pandemic legitimising, what the money men have always wanted for some time, the chance of taking the OUR football teams away from us forever.

Who'd have thought we'd see World Championship Boxing in Saudi or World Cups in Qatar. Remember the idea of the 39th game? If we for one moment let one single game, that should have been played at the Etihad, be played anywhere else, let alone without fans, then we are ploughing down the road to and existential crisis as fans of our club.

If our club, regardless of short term loss of TV money allows this to happen, then a bigger sign of contempt for our supporters I cannot imagine. Who can recall the early days of the takeover and Khaldoon learning all about the club's history from Gary James. Well I can assure those who may think different, all our home games have always been played in Manchester and always in front of our supporters. Our owners initial interest in upholding the best traditions of our fans and club (they are one and the same) could soon begin to look, like it probably always was, some placating publicity stunt.

In short, unless Manchester City play home games in Manchester in front of Manchester City fans then Manchester City should not play. If our owners allow anything other than this to happen, for whatever reason, then our owners are putting other's interests before those of our own, and frankly regardless of any success the have previously brought, I for one would rather be watching us play in League 2 than not at all, or worse still have our club potentially play home games abroad in front of overseas' fans as some money grabbing gimmick.

There will be many lessons learnt after Covid has gone. There may even be some beneficiaries such as nature and community spirit. What is startlingly evident however, is that this was the moment when we as fans realised we count for nothing.

Thanks for the mention. One small point - not all our home games have been played in Manchester, sadly. Prior to the takeover City did play a home game at Barnsley when our leadership at the time had booked a concert which meant we couldn't play at home. It's only a minor point but it does show that prior to our current ownership some did put profit (i.e. staging a concert in this case) above fans.

I tell you what, I used to think he was a proper gobshite, well I still do actually but that vid changed my opinion about him. He did tell it how it was and didn't say what most press and media have been spouting.
This is the vid, worth watching if you've not seen it.

So he is talking sense once,he hates our club,he a racist ****,don't give him an inch

Why would they need it?
A footballer is no different from any other worker who contracts covid 19 in the course of their daily work.
They play, they take the risk.
Don’t see a queue of court cases building up there.
Football is a contact sport. So in the currant climate shouldn't be played at all.

The fact that no club, ours included, has stated that they wouldn't be prepared to complete the season under any of the many scenarios being put forward. They all, apart from the potential relegation candidates, want the huge final tranche of TV money.
Of course money is a big part, football is like any other business but we were the only ones to say we will not risk any staff until it is completely safe

I must admit it was a shock to see him talk for more than 5mins and not mention us.

I think what he said in that vid the press won't entertain it, he was telling it as it is, do you really think these journalists will report what he said? Not one as for once Jordan was telling the truth for once.

Yes he's still a gobshite but just for those 20mins I thought he talked sense which isn't what he's known for.

This is the only two words that matter, contact sport, all the other stuff is bollocks noise, football trying to come up with how to finish the season,99% of it logistics and the like and 1% about safety

I would watch it. It beats walking down to the shops which is as good as it gets for me at the moment.
I think most of the i won't watch it brigade will watch it,i am desperate to see the boys again but only when it is safe for them and their families, same for everyone involved
what I hope happens is that nobody goes back to sky or bt and invests in a private way to watch it,let's take the chance to ruin them

You are probably right, I think most of us are saying it because we feel that the players and club are being pushed into a restart (if it starts) . All the crazy idea the press/media keep coming up with is pissing me of. Its embarrassing this push to get liverpool over the line.

There appears to be a new suggestion to restart every day from different pundits , and then the same pundits do an about turn the next day , its becoming farcical , but at least its confusing the Dippers , which isnt a hard thing to do , anyone with half a brain cell must realise football will never be put before lives.

Ladies and gents if we had any doubt journalists are scum I give you Oliver Holt. I'm just surprised he didn't mention ourselves.

Holt is one of those people who want to be treated as serious journalist and then act like a school boy fan sitting at his computer thinking he is very clever with his tweets.

To suggest that only rags and Everton fans want the season voided is ridulous and he seems to forget that this crisis affects lives throughout the country not just football fans.
I think he meant meant to say Manchester City and got it wrong because he is an out and out clown.

Not sure if this has been mentioned on here as I cba looking through 900+ pages, however with the World Cup in 2022 starting in November. Why don't they look at this from a different perspective in that have a 2021 season and a 2022 season running from January to the end of October each year. This may also allow the end of 2019/20 to be completed in December subject to health conditions and allow to be an enhanced pre-season for 2021. Then after the World Cup in 2022 start the 23/24 season earlier say at the start of July. Just a thought

It would cost an entire season's money.
