COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The number of recorded coronavirus fatalities has risen by 205 in the past 24 hours, taking the hospital death toll to 26,550.

Figures show that 178 people died in England, 12 died in Wales, 10 people died in Scotland and Northern Ireland recorded 5 deaths in its hospitals

Lowest for quite a long time which is good news. I know it's weekend but in comparison with recent weekends it still is a significant improvement.

So, presuming this second peak arrives, which seems very likely let's be honest... how many daily deaths do we think it'll take until they lockdown again? Or will they just not bother?

I guess lot of countries will just not bother, unless it's big, big numbers. Another lockdown would send economies to oblivion and nobody will dare to do it again. Countries who hated the lockdown most would be the last to consider it (USA, UK) + touristic countries if it happens in the summer. Croatia basically stopped testing 10 days ago to doctor their numbers in front of summer season. Though they have election soon, so that's another reason to make government response great (it's pretty good though).

And given that no country can lock down for the next 12 months then at some points we’ll have to open back up again. Protect the vulnerable and do all we can as individuals through social distancing to reduce the spread.

It's going to be a real challenge how we move forward and keep the spread of the virus at bay. I have no doubt we will be watching Germany very closely to see how things develop.

What concerns me most is if this proves impossible to manage without lock down measures, I think the restrictions are now starting to wear thin with many people and you can see the control measures slipping. If the R number shoots up with the Government be in a position to re-instate Furlough measures again?

As you say at some point we will have open up again and it will all be about protecting the vulnerable.

well then word it different, they have just clarified stay alert means stay at home
I think stay alert works.

It certainly reinforces the fact that CV19 isn’t gone away, so continue to social distance, continue to not touch your face, continue to avoid coughing on people, continue to do everything we’ve all been doing for the last six weeks, but whilst we try and maintain some modicum of normalcy whilst being allowed to go back to work.

I’m still lucky in that I could live this out and be a lazy **** for the next couple of years (plus I’ve been able to do my job from home) but I’ve had several mates laid off and about a dozen clients the same.

Until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment , this is the new norm. People will have to live with this risk and there will be periods of relaxation and tightening as we go through life until we have either of those.
Can someone tell me of any country that has had a long lockdown. 3 months, 4 months ?. All countries are trying to try and have some normality whilst trying to contain through social distancing and hygiene .
in any event he is hardly going to announce at 7 , right lads off you go boozers and clubs all open crack on. It will be slow and gradual from now on. You might be able to go to a library or a garden centre. Woo hoo party time!

If you have to clarify the message then the message is not clear, they say it means stay at home, maybe something like be careful would be better if they must change it

Do you feel the previous methods to protect the vulnerable worked?

I agree it is time to get things going again but as an older person I have very little confidence that "lessons will be learnt" from the recent happenings.

I didn’t need it clarifying as I’m not a moron.

It works perfectly well. How would you have worded it?
Be careful is much clearer than stay alert, this has to be aimed at the thicko's,as they have clarified it means stay at home, that has people here shaking their heads, media,Nicola S,wales and ireland,Nicola is talking now and all the questions are about what does stay alert means and why did he not discuss it with you and you had to find out in the paper,it is a crucial time and off goes boris on his own again

This is off the telegraph so a paywall so not posting link but free to look . It’s the professor previously advising commenting on risk by age....

Let's look at the young group. People are anxious about children, and there's 10 million under 15s in England and Wales, how many of those have died? Had Covid on their deaths out of these 30,000 have died? Two out of 10 million.”

Acknowledging such cases were “very tragic” he said, “this is the tiniest risk you could ever think of”.

Although children and young people may pass on Covid-19, their personal risk was “staggeringly low” he continued.

“If we look at under 25s, there're 17 million of them in the country where we have 26 deaths recorded,” he said, suggesting a similar risk would be seen in “a couple of days” in general accidents and sudden deaths.

However, he said the risk for the over 90s was 10,000 times as high, with more than one per cent of over 90s having died from Covid-19.

“That's a substantial proportion. That is 10,000 times the risk of the younger people,” he said, saying the sharp gradient of risk meant that it doubled roughly every six or seven years with age.

He said the Government’s attempt to communicate with the public was “completely embarrassing.”
