Weird Away Days

might well have been the picture of city team.. Could be another game I was at with roger palmer. Was it 81 ? I was thinking year before Wembley fa cup, but could be wrong. Was 15 at the time.

Can you remember score ?

Hell of a laugh, the "we shall not be moved while sat on floor" !
Think we lost 1-0, but not sure. Like yourself I was also only 15 back then

aston villa away then called division one, be about 1980, we got the full end behind the goals and obviously in those days it was stand up terraces. tbh cant remember the result ! I know dennis tueart scored from a pen.

we arrived an hour before KO, already quite a few city fans in the end. The songs where going beer was flowing. Then the Saturday special trains turned up, must have been 7,000 city fans, lots where in the villa end and started to wave at us. Trouble started caused by city fans in the villa end so police escorted them round the edge of the pitch and in to the away end. Must have been 150 or 200 of them.

this was still before KO, the end was packed. We all sang "we shall not, we shall not be moved". But the hilarious thing was we all sat on the floor as we sang, loud and for a long time. We did it a couple of times throughout the game after scoring.

Next the whole end held up the match day programme above their heads with the page open showing I think Roger Palmer ( could be wrong ) and sang "you'll never walk alone". The villa fans at each side where in stitches. Ten minutes later the whole end picked up off the floor any chip paper wrappers, pie tins, any old rubbish and held that up to the song of YWNWA. The sight was unbelievable, the rubbish held in the air and the song echoing round. Again villa fans where laughing away.

was much the same throughout the game, songs belting out, great away day.

Anybody else by any chance go to that game ?

im also pretty sure we sang if you hate man utd long before 1990.

I thought , (in fact I am sure ) it was a picture of john bond and I would swear singing the..if you hate man united...in 76

I might have got the tueart penalty mixed up with wolves away around the same time !

it would have been the john bond days.

do remember just vefore the game started the photographers walking behind our goal to set there cameras up. One guy had a Colombo style beige Mac on, Sombody at the back of our end threw a pie right over and hit the guy with beige Mac on right on his shoulder all down his coat. So he went over to two coppers and told them then pointed to the back, officers looked at him as though to say "don't be a t**t mate" !!

away days are not as good now, what I miss is the fans in the stands way before players come out, warming up with songs. When the players came out our end went in uproar. Ok so you can say drinks cant go in the stands, but what do you go to football for to have a pint or welcome your team on to the pitch. Good days though.

And yes defo heard the hate man u clap your hands for a long time.

Like I mentioned in my earlier post , it was the version of ‘ if u hate Newcastle ‘ that was unique
It wasn’t the faster Version we use to sing about to Utd which as others have posted was around much earlier , it was the slower version with two claps at the end of each line and the full eye eye yippee yippee eye courus at the end, much as u would expect a group of schoolchildren /scouts etc to sing it ?
but obviously with Newcastle inserted instead of ‘she’ll be coming round the mountain !’

believe u me if you was there ,u was left in no uncertain terms that what they singing and the way that it was sung , they meant every last word of it !

bless em !

ok mate, I really dont remember that song though, although I was definately at that game, mind you, the wife is right, I am puddled

The atmosphere was poisonous in the City end that day

I remember two blokes scrapping near the end of the game because one of them had started chanting Psycho Out. The other guy objected to that. Not because he was calling for the manager's head but because he'd called him Psycho. The guy thought that was too familiar and said it should have been Pearce Out!
