Bluemoon Angling Thread

Haha. Definitely not suitable for a savage barbel take mate, lunging for a rod butt just before it's dragged off the rod rest has happened to me many times usually when I'm having a piss.

I can't forget(may have told this tale before) when I was carp fishing over on the Ebro with my mate. Just having a few tins of beer (like you do) and he had a nice Fox carp rod and Shimano reel. We only intended grabbing an hour or so when sun was setting as we'd just done a gruelling 8 hours baking in the sun cat fishing off a boat.

Anyway we're sat there with just a rod each, bit of bait, terminal end tackle and a net. We both used a can of Estrella, butt ring perched on can for rod rest setting the baitrunner on light.

Next minute my mates baitrunner was spinning round like crazy as a carp or cat took it and as he went for the rod it somehow shot into the water just as my mate made a grab for the rod butt. Rod was dragged 30 yards or so till fish dragged it into the depths

My mate sat there fuckin' sick as a chip..... "Nevermind mate things could be worse" I quipped....... "How d'ya mean"? He asked..... "We'll, you may of lost your rod but I managed to grab your tin of beer before it fell in the water mate"; )

He was quite bemused at my dry sarky reply before I started giggling like a girl. We had abother beer over it as he lamented his beloved rod and reel he'd just lost.
Have seen it happen numerous times in a boat fly fishing for rainbow. Put down rod to have a piss or a bite to eat, watch rod catapult over boat gunnel. Chase rod round loch. Not much chance of getting your rod back on the Ebro though I would imagine.

No mate. The Ebro is a big powerful river, 60ft deep not far from where I was fishing. I lost a drone in there once. Plan was to set it up hovering and film my mate catching a big cat from above. I did the calibration dance(as it's called) before sending it up briefly on hover. I can only imagine water spray from the boat bombing down the river at 50mph had caused it to malfunction, shorting the electrics.

My mate had his revenge on me for laughing at him that day when the drone hovered there some 20 seconds or so before shooting (3m high) horizontally across the water before nosediving into the depths of the mighty Ebro. I don't fly drones nowadays, too costly!
I still have one though. But need a gimbal and GoPro type camera if I'm brave enough to try and attempt aerial footage. Thing is I had some stunning footage high above the Ebro valley on the SD card that went in the water, was more gutted I'd lost that TBH: (

Ha, thats a tough one for sure. I have a buddy that was fishing Linlithgow Loch, anchored in a pretty strong squall. As the day went on the waves got closer and closer to the gunnel behind him until they came right over and the boat sunk with him and all his equipment. Now we boat fishers like to be prepared and will typically have two or three rods, up to 20 lines, numerous reels and boxes and boxes of flies so he believes he lost about £6/7 grand of stuff. It would of been worth his while draining the loch but sadly the fishery weren't up for that. His insurance wouldn't pay up for his flies as they deemed them a collection which he should have declared as a single item as they were worth more than £2 grand. We still take the piss out of him when we fish Linlithgow.

Here's something you might enjoy watching. My good mate Ian made a vlog on the Ebro with another mate Robbie who's a guide. I'm filming most of it. Watch 5:12 and I'm battling a decent catfish.

Jeremy Wade uses other anglers who often get a bite on their rods before he 'Wade's' over to strike. This is real River Monsters unedited! Enjoy.

Smashing video mate. Can I politely suggest though that your mate gets hold of a fighting harness rather than using his groin as leverage!

Haha! You mean a butt pad we call a puff pad. Under the bollocks and grimace mate, whatever the size of fish. Leaves us looking like Buster Gonad(Viz) sometimes though. Ouch!!!; )

My PB is on page 29. 147lb of smelly pussy.

@snorky would shag that (and worse)

lol. He could stick his head first to see if it's worth chancing his maggot dick in there; )

Would take a brave man to shag a big cat mate. Big powerful serrated crusher pads just inside the jaws. A fish over 100lb can chomp a 10lb carp as a snack!

Got a guided trip booked on the Ebro in September 6th but I can’t see that going ahead.

3rd time out since lockdown was eased, went up to Nantwich, a pool called Stacey's, supposed to have big carp in it,saw 1 carp come out about 15lbs,i caught all day, f1s every single fish looked the same ,same look same weight(about1lb),i fucking hate f1s,bred for the match anglers who just want weight, fucking hate match fishermen, gobshites until its their time to fish then expect deathly silence, pole wielding cocks

rant over

First Tench session of the year this morning on a localish gravel pit. It's mega weedy and of course no one has raked any swims yet so 4:30am saw me flinging a rake, sweating and covered in stinking silt. Never mind I got a nice little swim cleared and the float set up perfectly so I could relax and wait for the Tincas to arrive. Only problem was they did not arrive, they were rolling about 30-40yds out taking the piss but not a sniff of them in my float swim. So after 6 hours staring at a motionless float I chucked the left over bait in and packed everything but the rod away and guess what, tench fizz around my float. I decide to sack off work a bit longer and see if can bag one and then the wife rings just as I get my first bite and promptly miss it. Quickly get a bait back out there, Tench still fizzing, another bite, Tench on, thump, thump, thump, and then the hook pulled. Aggghhhh, 3-4 big areas of fizz appear as every Tench in the swim scarpers. Oh well, still enjoyed it.

Great post. Like you, I liked to fish for tench when I was a kid but never really bother these days. I tell you where has plenty, and used to be one of the best tench waters in the country: Lymmvale in Cheshire. I used to fish it long-stay for the carp but would sometimes dedicate a rod or morning to the tench.

They were massive. I had catches of up to twenty of them in the 5-8lb bracket. My best is still my PB and I suspect I’ll never beat it: 9lb 2oz.
Was a member of Lymm AC a couple or three seasons early 90s mate and have fished Lymmvale once. Didn't catch a tench though. They had some clonking great Golden Orfe in there and huge chub. Caught quite a few of each Waggler fishing. It Was their flagship water at the time, especially for tench but I liked fishing the ponds at Antrobus or the Dane too.

Have considered rejoining but I think Prince Albert is the better option.

Sods law pal, probably would have fished it's head off if you'd have fished into the evening till dusk.

Prince Albert is ten times as good a club as Lymm. It’s badly run and makes terrible mistakes. Lymmvale isn’t what it was either, I believe. It was a brilliant water 20 years ago though. I had a 7-10 chub there too which is another PB I’ll never beat. Never had an Orfe but my mate caught the British record there- which still stands.

Drop me a pm if you want help with any PA waters. I know most of them, including some good tench waters.
