Bluemoon Angling Thread

firstly,to the person who doesn't feel comfortable as they are relative new comers to fishing, Ive been fishing roughly 10 years,im gutted I never started earlier,a friend took me,first time my deck chair blew in the pond and my line got tangled 100s of times, but my mate was patient with me and I ended u catching approx. 40 perch, none bigger than the size of my little finger but that wasn't the point, just being out in the countryside fresh air and a bit of freedom

I’ve been going out every day since Wednesday. Yesterday I drove to a local pond to fish for tench in the afternoon. It’s only a small pond and there was quite a few anglers on so I left it and explored a new canal which I hadn’t been on. It was bright sunshine and I walked a mile or two with the lure gear. One follow off a little pike and that was it. I checked back at the tench pond about 7.30pm and it was empty so I set up a lift float and baited with pellets, with a pellet banded to the hook. I sensed fish moved in and got a bite at dusk which I missed . The water was shallow and I got up for a piss and something spooked off the baited area. That was it.

Today I took the light lure gear out on a local reservoir that nobody fishes because of the hike. It went really well. I’d heard a rumour of big perch but was really fishing the unknown. Had a jack pike early on and lost another, but was getting lots of nibbles and follows. After a couple of hours of searching and a few changes of lures, I found what I was after: a perch of about 1lb 12oz. As this was a mystery tour I was delighted. I managed another jack and went home for a curry, delighted.

Thursday on the Staffs-Worcester canal with my brother and a mate all fishing 15m apart. 3 other anglers came which is unheard of for that stretch. Quite hard going though but it was bloody cold. Didn't take my full winter gear which was a mistake. Saw some action with roach, skimmers and small rudd but just great to be out again.

Friday went to a Leamington Anglers water 15 minutes from home. 14 cars in the car park which, again is unheard of. Quite a big water though so plenty of room. As I said before it's a bit over-stocked in my opinion but it was a great day float fishing at close range. Had a 3lbs bream which came in like an old rag, a good (real) crucian of around a pound and loads of skimmers and roach. Oh, and a 7 oz tench which were put in last year. Took full winter gear this time for which I was thankful.

In view of the crowds, I'm now giving it a miss until Monday.

Cracking post DD: )

The lift float method evoked fond memories for me and my mind shot back to the 80s when I read that mate. Used to love tench fishing a small pond I fished in Denton. I'd be walking down the edge of field path eagerly anticipating catching Mr red eye, mist rolling just as dawn broke on a summers morning. First glimpse of the pond and a coot would usually greet me by squawking its head off.

Creeping to my chosen peg, usually against edge of a thick rat-tail weedbed that divided pond, hence name 'figure eight' pond. Stealth like searching for giveaway pinprick Tench bubbles that they were hungry. A small handful of sweetcorn and a few maggots before eagerly setting rod up with a small peacock waggler with bulk of shot under the eye of the float. Just a single BB about 3-6" lay on bottom with a piece bread flake attached to a 12s hook.

The lift method is so called as it's finely balanced(for benefit of others as DD knows this). By that the BB(or AAA) weight lifts the float when a fish picks up the bait as the float is delicately counter balanced by the weight near the hook. Tench are known for giving the classic bite, better than any other stillwater fish imo. A few pinprick bubbles around the float waiting for a tell tale enquiry. Float dancing about on the surface by a slight Bob or two. It was like watching Terry Griffiths taking a shot in snooker dithering about! Then a pause and another teeze or two. Jeez go on Mr tench take the bait! Arm twitching to strike but can't strike too early or I'd miss and spook him or his mates on the prowl for food.

Sitting on hands willing the bloody float to go. Eventually the float lifts up ever so slow and methodically and lays flat on the surface. Arm twitching as I'd wait for float to sail away before striking. Then bam!!! Rod tip arches round and old Mr red eye would thump on the rod tip as it lunges for the sanctuary of the weed bed less that a yard from where I'd hooked him. Eventually I'd slide the net under and have a fishing orgasm in my head. Yes, get in you beauty! And when I say beauty, a tench for me is my favourite freshwater course fish. Olive green with small red eyes and strong distinct paddle like tailfin. Holding a tench is even more slippier than a bar of carbolic soap at bathtime!

I miss fishing there. Pristine tench anywhere between 2-6lb from a small farm pond, angling bliss!

Anyone who knows a good tench fishing venue please let this old boy know as it's a while ago since I fished a proper tench water.

Great post. Like you, I liked to fish for tench when I was a kid but never really bother these days. I tell you where has plenty, and used to be one of the best tench waters in the country: Lymmvale in Cheshire. I used to fish it long-stay for the carp but would sometimes dedicate a rod or morning to the tench.

They were massive. I had catches of up to twenty of them in the 5-8lb bracket. My best is still my PB and I suspect I’ll never beat it: 9lb 2oz.
