I think the police made a decision not to try and halt the statue removal due to an already fraught situation becoming a riot like it was in nearby St Paul's in 81. Memories of TV footage there(amongst several other major cities) are still etched into minds of those old enough to remember. The police made the right decision I think, but that statue was there to remind society that we have moved on from 17th century slaverery the city was built on. Looks like mob rule and anarchy is just around the corner unfortunately.Well we have to draw a line somewhere with it and I think someone who’s only made it to where they are through something as bad as slavery is the place to draw the line.
Again, they shouldn’t have ripped it down and thrown it in the river but the council should have listened to the residents who didn’t want it and put it in a museum.
