George Floyd murder | Clashes between US police and protestors

I wouldn't say it's something that has been removed from history because I know I was taught it. Ask people whether they know of the slave trade and whether it was wrong and 99% will say yes it was all wrong with the other 1% being knuckle dragging idiots or just thick.

I think what you want is to expose the British part of it but still it isn't something that was uniquely British or a product of British imperialism specifically. The slave trade was the doing of the entirety of Western Europe and then the US, first started by the Portuguese.

I've been to Barcelona and in La Rambla stands a massive statue of Christopher Columbus, remembered fondly for discovering the new world yet he also saw the new world as an import opportunity for slaves..... Should that statue be pulled down? God, even Colombia as a country was named after him, should they rename their country?

What I'm trying to say is this all seems an act of symbolism but is this now a trigger to confiscate and knock down everything that had any relation whatsoever to the slave trade or anything at all related to imperialism? A simple history lesson tells us who these people were and why we shouldn't look so nicely at their statues.

It's not a problem to me but I can see why some will see this as an undemocratic and highly politicised attempt to censure the past.
I agree wholeheartedly with your post with the exception of the slave trade was first started by the Portuguese, They may have started the export to the America's but slavery has, unfortunately, existed since man first walked the earth. I don't think the pyramids, for one example, were built by a willing workforce who all received a days pay for a days graft, the same can be said of the building of Stonehenge and any other ancient structures. Slavery is/was evil and is a stain on mankinds history but to say it was started 300 (?) years ago is wrong.

Yep.
Egypt,Greece,Rome and plenty of others were heavily reliant on slaves.

It seems to be open season on police officers now. Incident occurred in Hackney today

It's not open season.

There are around 30000 assaults on police officers each year with a third resulting in injury

Where you have criminals and some gangs that don't believe in following the law, then you will have people willing to attack the police.

They were getting bricks thrown at them in harpurhey last year in one problem area if I recaol

It's not right and anyone attacking the police doing their lawful job should be banged up, but let's not start pretending the police are under constant attack when out and about, the majority of the country are law abiding and repsectful.

30,000 is quite alot in one year, 82 assaults a day too many.

So we’ve got a statue of Emmeiline Pankhurst in St Peter’s Square.

But did you all know that she was a member of the British Fascists?

And that all of the Suffragettes of the time were either members of the British Fascists and later the BUF or supporters of Fascism?

Should her statue and all suffragette commemorations and museums be taken down and closed down?

It’s getting fucking ridiculous now, they will start burning certain books soon and we all nowhere that leads.
We will get to the stage we’re police won’t do anything for fear of been called racist or upsetting communities, oh wait that’s already happened hasn’t it.

She died in 1928 and was a member of the Conservative Party. Which to be fair is close enough.

'Apper'ay? 'Kinell, that sweet, delightful sight for many a sore eye has clearly descended into the abyss. Used to be a thriving, commercial hub, corner of Moston Lane - every fuckin' shop yer could want, even a Co-op DEPARTMENT store, and 'twas a sports shop in 'Apper'ay that I first cast my eye on a blue footy shirt - cotton, quarter of an inch thick, collar 'n cuffs, p'raps Bukta, but how it seems to have been fucked up and fucked over by 'developers'!

This doesn't apply to Corbyn though does it, you hypocrite

Not when he’s done it consistently throughout his career no.

And Shapiro hasn’t been consistently racist towards a particular set of people and doesn’t want to be President.

Corbyn’s comments are also worse, which is the main thing and he wanted to be PM!

The hypocrisy is on your side Russ. Johnson’s past controversial comments are dragged up every day on here by the staunch Labour supporters but then they’ll defend Corbyn’s to the death.

I didn’t vote for either so am able to criticise both.

I get the feeling you’re angry and I can appreciate that, with socialism no longer having a chance for probably at least the next decade but don’t take it out on me.

Good post and I will not rest or desist until those triangular monstrosities are ripped down and buried into the sands of time. If we are going to have a better new world then all references to slavery and or inequality have to be removed in the interests of clarity and balance. And don't get me started on Rome!

I see the nutjobs are taking over this thread.

The nutjobs are taking over out there, too. There's a mad scramble in council offices looking to see if anything made, bought, manufactured, or issued before yesterday has some dark connotations, and needs taking down to the council tip for recycling - but yer'd have to wait, perhaps, until they were fully open.

Slave trade art at the MCC, Bournemouth have a statue of Lord Baden Powell that has come under scrutiny. Rochdale has a statue of Our Screechin' Gracie, gotta be some skeleton in that gal's cupboard. Oh, and our Cenotaph is a genuine Lutyens - one of only eight, and the flags thereon are stone, so those Whitehall Cenotaph arsonists, with the emphasis on the first syllable, will have a hard time setting fire to 'em. I have a nagging feelin, that this is never-ending.
