George Floyd murder | Clashes between US police and protestors

There has been a lot of people in conservative circles claiming the left would go this ridiculous with its requests for quite some time, I thought they were bitter right wingers but things are getting more ridiculous by the day.

Why are they focusing on Nelson’s Column? Start talking about educating people in school to be better people for fuck sake.
I'm not sure it's even what I would term 'the left' anymore tbh. It's a peculiar section of our society that revel in display of their own virtue to the point where it becomes competitive. We are hearing a lot of hysterical white people, but not enough black voices as far as I can tell. In my extensive survey of one black mate on the phone this week, it seems our ignorance of the statues and our nations history is the offensive thing rather than the statues. Still if pulling a few down brings our history to our attention it may be worth doing? BBC comedy from the 90's was not touched upon in our conversation - I can only assume 400 years of slavery is fine, but papa lazarou and little britain are still too traumatic for discussion.

When we were evolving from the Primates and had not learned to speak, our ancestors used to make monkey noises which is really really racist. We should all boycott each other and throw each other into the docks.
You need to stop watching 2001 A Space Odyssey. You will be wanting to throw rocks at the other apes soon. (Disclaimer - no disrespect meant to other species of apes).

As someone interested in history and great people throughout history, even those with chequered pasts, who were of their time, it’s so bizarre to me they’d want to get rid of Nelson’s Column.

They likely know nothing of him and are just seeing a powerful white man of the past so he’s fair game.

They’re really getting away from making proper change here which I think should be directed at the education system.

The posters in here having a go at people being upset over statues should really turn their attention to the organisers, it’s BLM that are the ones targeting statues of anyone that doesn’t fit their post modern views and making the debate about that rather than current every day racism.

Yes Colston was a particularly bad guy and I have no qualms about him being removed, just not in that manner but targeting statues of people who were instrumental in saving the country from tyranny is too far.

I truly believe they don’t know what they really want in the UK.

Love to see all the right wing fuckers getting their knickers in a twist over this, getting more and more outlandish with their posts. Coincidentally it's the same posters who were more angry at people protesting than they were at the death of George Floyd. Pretending they were concerned about the covid infection rate. We get it, you don't mind statues of slave traders, you don't mind blackface, you laugh at racist jokes and want it to be like it was when you were younger when life hadn't ground you down and you still had dreams and it was alright to be casually racist. Fuck enablers.

I think this is part of a wider conspiracy. How do you discredit a movement which has a legitimate point and wants change? 1) make the ‘if you don’t like it leave’ argument mainstream(Nick Ferrari) and 2) find extremists, make them the centre and use that to show the whole movement is absurd. The old, ‘where will it end’ argument

If this is aimed at anywhere towards me I suggest you read my posts again. I’ve also not seen people “getting their knickers in a twist” over Colston being taken down, the majority support it.

It’s particularly key monuments like Nelson’s Column and even the Churchill statue I’m taking umbrage with.

And I’m also pointing out the ridiculousness of it as a tactic to trying to drive change across the UK. They could probably get Johnson’s ear if they were smart enough or could levy for change in education, where I think racism could get a real kicking.

But they’re too daft and are going for symbols they know nothing about.

But hey ho if you want to create a straw man be my guest.

There are different types of enablers. Some are as you describe, but they are obvious. The really dangerous ones are at either extreme seeking to polarise the debate so that it becomes 'them and us' instead of a conversation. This is how trump works and to an extent Boris and I suppose Farage. You also are at it in your own little way.

I don’t see it as a conspiracy at all.

It’s the fault of BLM for turning on these statues, they’ve shifted the debate away from current prejudices and black lives to “which statue deserves to stay”.

BLM have now asked for the removal of 78 statues and monuments, not all were slave traders.

This movement is at danger of collapsing due to it essentially amounting to a bunch of students in their thinking.

I hope it doesn’t and I hope they shift the debate onto how to improve society without removing any famous monuments.

I have said if they were solely a slave trader then fine, put it to a community vote and get rid into a museum.

Like everything else in the west coast of Scotland, this has turned into a sectarian debate with people on each side desperate to jump on the bandwagon and link it to their own 'cause'. Republicans and the green brigade getting involved in the protests, graffiti, street sign renaming etc etc whilst the 'Loyal defence league' out defending statues etc. Fucking depressing.

Gavin and Stacey FFS! Watching that for a second time through the lock down was one of the key things that got me through. 'Chinese Alan' offensive, oh come on.

Nothing like a bit of book-burning to pretend we've always had cordial relations with the Germans.

What's the point in a state broadcaster if they're not going to protect cultural assets like this?

I think the BBC needs to go now and I’d never thought I’d say it.

Not for this specifically although it’s not helped.

Don’t get me started on that Rag infested BBC Sport department.

If white privilege is a thing then why do the highest earning, least in debt and best educated ethnic group in the USA identify as “Asian” ....Are White people selectively racist against blacks?

Happy to be educated....
