General Videogame Thread

Sadly you've got years for them. GTA6 is rumoured to be around 2022/23. Bethesda recently said they're not pushing big on the next Elder Scrolls until Starfield is out. So you're looking a few years there too. Shite.

A GTA 6 reveal is years away I think, or else they wouldn’t have made plans to release GTA 5 on the next gen consoles. I took it as a sweetener to keep fans quiet for a couple of years. All I’m going to say is I hope the next game is incredible, as waiting every 10 years for a new edition of the franchise is ridiculous.

I thought there would be some huge title to grab peoples attention. Im not techy enough to understand all the numbers that come with the ps5, for me its just about the games and where they push the boundaries. Some cool stuff about sound and the way it can develop lighting and stuff, but without a big game like those mentioned, i doubt ill be jumping straight in.

Well, there was plenty that felt huge for me to be honest. Horizon Zero Dawn II was a massive announcement. First was a stunningly good, and hugely successful, game. New SpiderMan (even if its come out that its now a remaster/expansion), Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank are all pretty big for me. They're huge games. Square Enix are also a big deal so their new IP Project Athia looks really intriguing.

Give it time and there will be eventually a new Uncharted game no doubt when Naughty Dog start working on a new game post the inevitable TLOU2 ps5 port. There will be a new God of War 2. Ghost of Tsushima will probs be ported over too. I'm sure there will be some kind of huge epic from PushSquare (shadow of colossus people). Kojima will probably get working on some kind of Death Stranding sequel too. Silent Hills is being rumoured again, and probs will happen.

Thing is with GTA and Skyrim etc, is their third party developers. Nowt Sony (or Xbox) can do about them. They've just gotta wait. On things they can control, Playstation did really well last night. They announced games for multiple of their big exclusive games (Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo, Ratchet, new Little Big Planet, Demon's Souls remake), and announced lots of big popular third party IPs too - Resident Evil 8, Hitman 3 etc. Add to that the fact we know there is a new Assassin's Creed coming, there will be a new Far Cry too undoubtedly, plus Cyberpunk will be likely ported too, and its a pretty rosey launch IMO.

Rockstar are a rule unto themselves. They're huge, so there's nowt Sony or Microsoft can do but wait.

Ah I think we're a couple of years off that though, so i can't wait. I'll probably just happily buy any remaster anyway, as TLOU was one of my fave games of all time and I certainly didn't regret doing the same for the PS4. Played it 2/3 times more.

TLOU should be my type of game. I love the huge world, beautiful scenery, compelling story driven games. But I just couldn't get used to the control scheme. If I remember it has a daft hit a d pad button to turn round rather than being able to do it on the sticks, effectively the sticks only give you 180degrees of movement. Am I imagining this? Do you know if you can change it in the set up? Has it changed in an update? Sorry for all the questions but I know you know your shit and I want to get the new one (just because it looks gorgeous) but also if I do wanted to play the first one properly before starting 2.

You are definitely imagining it. Played TLOU through about five times and had absolutely no issue with the controls at all. You could turn 360 easy. There was a quick turn button for sprint getaways, yes, but I rarely used it tbh. You could turn just fine normally. Maybe you got bogged down by trying to use that (understandably, given it was suggestion) that you didn't give the usual way a go?

Will see if it was the quick turn thing that was doing my head in. Cheers for that. I am just re downloading it now.

It was fiddly, yeah, so most likely that. I gave up on that action it and fobbed it off. I've played through it plenty of times with no problem though so you should be fine too.

It wasn't the quick turn thing.

It's the fact you can't make your character ever face the camera. So you have to physically turn rather than being able to do it with move and look like in most third person games.

I am guessing the quick turn thing was their way of addressing this.

I will just have to change the way I play as I know the first one is on most owners lists of must play games, but I knew there was something different about the controls from normal.

Cheers again. You spurred me on to starting it.

How are people saying there was no big announcements? Spider-man and horizon were two of the biggest and best games of this generation, given naughty dog have been busy with the last of us part two it literally doesn’t come much bigger. Add to that gran turismo and ratchet and clank which are another two big heavy hitters and a few more niche titles and it’s easily the best launch window we’ve seen. Also the two Bethesda games ghostwire and deathloop (which looked amazing) are times ps5 exclusives too. The PS4 launched with knack and a shit killzone, the PS3 had resistance fall of man which was great but then had nothing else for over a year. That was largely exclusive titles and you've still got your third party stuff on top of it to come.

I can suppose the months long wait for any developments/announcements on Starfield (Bethesda) is that they're planning a PS5 release?
That said I don't have much faith in Bethesda these days.

I don't really get your point tbh mate! Ha. Having played a shit tonne of third person action games, it felt quite normal to me. Honestly confused, but oh well.

Very little detail from what ive seen on Starfield but it does look like it will get a ps5 release which is good. Really looking forward to this one, hoping it can push what Elite nearly delivered and avoid what No Mans Sky was. A Space RPG with a clear storyline that the previous two space games really lacked.

Enjoyed your review on TLOU 2 and looks a stunning game. Hopefully it gives the player a little more exploration than the first game but maintains the story and atmosphere, which based on your review it does.

If we're talking Bethesda focus circa 2008-2015, i'd be more excited. After seeing what they've pulled recently with microtransactions and sloppy work on Fallout 76, i'm more concerned.

My biggest hope is that the negative reaction has been a massive wake-up call that they cannot take their usually loyal fanbase for granted, and endeavour to make Starfield the Space RPG experience we all want and know Bethesda is capable of. Outer Worlds as an example was great, loved it, but had it's limitations. It's a genre i've waited for years since Mass Effect. Here's hoping though, eh!

Hopefully this helps. I didn't explain it well.

This is what happens in most third person games in my opinion when you move the character with just the left stick. The player rotates 180 degrees with each change of direction.

This is the same input on for TLOU

For me the second one makes turning around and repositioning the camera behind me way more tricky and therefore not as fluid

I mustn't have played many third person with this method, certainly it's the first triple A title I can think of with it.

Realise it's just my opinion but wanted p explain myself better.

Spent a few hours watching the stuff from last night, and I've decided I'm no longer going to purchase PS5 at launch.

There's just nothing that does it for me, except maybe, maybe HZD2.

That Deathloop looks utterly turd, I don't do FPS anyway but that looks spectacularly wank.
Same goes for Ghostline Tokyo. Looks merely to be a lighting showcase, with pretty neon and reflections, but wank gameplay.
GT7 just isn't for me, it looks pretty, but you cannot appreciate it in aa driving game so unforgiving, because if you look at the scenery, you will crash.
Spiderman...meh, I'll get it eventually but it's not the Earth-shattering leap the first one was.

But yeah, think I'll wait for TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 and then purchase.

In the meantime, a 3rd playthrough of RDR2 at a snail's pace should suffice.

@twosips are there any spoilers in your TLOU2 review? I can't watch it if there are.

Nothing that I didn't already know about from trailers mate.

EDIT - @quiet_riot - from what I know, Naughty Dog have been insanely tight with spoilers apparently. Not allowed to discuss the plot at all, outside of the trailer stuff. I've read a few reviews today and not seen any at all, so I think you're safe tbh.

Oh yeah! I know what you mean now. Was a bit odd that, yeah. Weirdly, it never bothered me at all. Never really saw anyone mention it in reviews too, and I remember absorbing loads of them before reading it.

I'm pretty certain the solution was to just turn the camera round though from what I can remember and Joel moved with it? The idea was, I presume, to amp up the horror stakes, so you only ever really had a normal line of sight and he would face the way the camera was looking or sumat? It was intentional to make it more of a struggle, so it was a bit more survivaly. Maybe i'm wrong. All I know is that i was fine just moving the camera around and never really had any problems with it. I kinda enjoyed it if anything.

As I am nearing the end of Far Cry 5 I have been having a bit of a dalliance with the Julius open source version of Caesar 3, welcome back my old friend what a city builder, I never tire of getting a “Pah! You’ve gone through those funds quickly” from the emperor
