They've not played any differently, but those fine margin games are just slowly creeping away from them. The mentality isn't what it was.

It's just regression to the mean.

We know from our *successful* centurions season, that you get on a roll, you feel unbeatable and snatch games at the end that you probably shouldn't win. After a while the aura builds up and you're 1-0 up before the whistle goes. Managers start resting people in your games because it's not worth it for them, top 6 coaches try insane new tactics they've never shown their team before. Before you know it you're 15 games into a winning streak and you've won the league in December.

But it's a bubble. All the underlying stats showed they were getting results way above their level of performance, and in the end it's just a numbers game. You slip up. The bubble pops.

They're still a good side but they were never up there with us 17-19, United 99, Arsenal 04 or Chelsea 05. And the lack of investment will bite them in the arse if they're stupid enough to do it again.

Plus I'm suspecting that they aren't going to spend much, they've already hinted that us winning at CAS is why that's the case.

Although who do they buy anyway? They don't bother except in the CL and PL. They buy competitive first-team quality players and it means that either they or the players they're replacing are under-used, or they're unnecessarily rotated losing all momentum. Or they buy more backup which won't help the second they have an injury.

It's not like they can upgrade much either. It's really only a Wijnaldum upgrade they need, and if they're feeling brave they could see if they can improve upon Gomez and Firmino.

Everything's lining up for them to have certain difficulties next year. But I said that last year so we'll wait and see.

We wait 44 years for a league title, and win it in the best possible way imaginable - a moment that dwarves any other in the history of the English game for drama and emotion, fans on the pitch, mass celebrations in town etc.
They wait 30 years and win it in the most low-key season in living memory with no fans in the ground and no real celebration. And see their campaign peter out in disappointment, first having us hand them their arses, then letting slip the chance of outstripping our 100 points. Compounded by CAS kiboshing their efforts to ruin us.
Ignore the bravado: the gloss has been well and truly taken off the title win. And it‘s hurting them.
