#9 | Gabriel Jesus - 2019/20 Performances

People can be so unbelievably harsh about any player. I was reading through the post match threads for the last time we lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup three years ago and the way people were writing about De Bruyne and Silva would look awful in hindsight. At the moment people are being very harsh about Mendy more than anyone. Look how City fans have aggressively TURNED on Bernardo, who clearly needs support.

This however is the most annoying of threads. Jesus gets criticism, and many times it's deserved. But with Jesus people have a NEED to go out of their way and write why he'll never make it. People can't say, 'Oh he wasn't great today'. It's, 'Oh he wasn't great today and he never will be'. In the process to make their point, they will deify Aguero and act like he's never done anything wrong (similar to Fernandinho should be in DM discussion this season). "Well Aguero would have just dribbled around all 6 defenders and chipped the keeper, therefore Jesus is shit". I mean we all know how good Aguero has been and still is in fact, but making stuff up doesn't help. Unfortunately, in response you'll get some folks dragging Aguero through the mud to showcase how a negative quality of Jesus isn't so bad, and yeah that's irritating too.

What stings the most is two things. Firstly, this thing is ridiculously partisan. Jesus does something bad and it's, "Well Aguero would have done that right". Every time. But then Aguero cocks up and you have different people say, "That's it, we need to move on, promote Jesus". Secondly, 3 years ago all these comments were the same but in reverse. "Aguero's done, here's why Jesus blah blah blah." So the fact City fans can be so fickle is maddening.

And finally, the reality is, people just need a scapegoat, and people like to big up who's not on the pitch when we lose. Cancelo and previously Danilo are world beaters whenever Walker has struggled. Danilo is still being overrated despite not setting the world alight at Juventus. Foden is always the answer, except when he isn't. Sané's faults all disappeared last season. And when Jesus struggles, it's because he's not Aguero.

As dom says, it's almost certainly a team issue, but that would be complicated to shout at the tele, so we just slag the players off; there's no loyalty at times. So people criticise Jesus for not being Aguero because it's easy, and unfortunately some people go the other way because it's easy to. It's akin to the crappy punditry we all complain about from SkySports or BT. Lazy.
Looking down the line again and still offside,it is not a team issue,he has to get in tune with kev in particular and he has had three years to do it,when he is there he is offside, when raz gets the chances ,he is there but is not offside all the time,it is his issue

Isn't Pep like that - critical of the team and points out areas of improvement when we win, but backs the players and goes completely over the top in appreciation when we lose?

No, Pep knows that Jesus just put in a massive shift occupying 2 defenders, holding the ball up, linking play, creating space for people like Sterling to run into.

Did you wait for him to score an offside goal to reply to that? You're extremely petty with this.

And you are straight here
And so are you..

Revolutionary. Praising a striker for doing everything besides his role in the team. You keep celebrating mediocrity I will keep pointing out he is wank at finishing.

It's 2020, not 1970.

Striker's role in the game is not just to score. How can you watch a Pep Guardiola side for 5 years without picking this up? And even if it was, he's still got nearly 70 goals in 90 odd starts.

Do you not remember the whole of 2016 and 2017 when Aguero was being dropped for not doing enough work outside the box, and then worked incredibly hard to improve that area of the game until Pep was happy with it?

Those who have nailed their colours to the mast regarding a Jesus will never change their mind and any game without a goal will feel like vindication.

it’s not.

It was a poor game if you deliberately ignore all of the good work he does that creates goals for the side and only judge him on a lob attempt at full sprint and timing a run in the 95th minute.
Who needs goals from everyone else, Gabby should be scoring all of our goals, that’s the only thing he’s on the pitch for!

The fact that any other player scores at all, much less so many other players scoring so many goals when he is playing is but more proof he is useless!

There's a difference between saying, 'Oh you could have been a bit better there', and 'You're shit, you'll never make it with us'
Sure the words might be different, but the intention or feeling can be the same. Pep is not kind of person to publicly say those words ever but you can't honestly believe that he doesn't speak his mind, in whatever words he likes, in private. This forum being anonymous is a bit like that.

If he scored, there'd be the same number of negative comments, just about how it means nothing against Watford, or if we're already leading, instead.

You think Pep tells his players that they have no future at the club after every little thing they do wrong? Or that they are shit footballers?

I'd hope not

He might also know that he's not a great goal scorer and feel that once Aguero leaves, that's something we will desperately need - more than occupying 2 defenders, holding the ball up, linking play, creating space for people like Sterling to run into.

I have never said sell him he is shit so I don't know why I get battered,I want him to be better, after three years and he still makes the same mistakes I am starting to write him off,up to now I just want him to do better as a striker or move him to left wing and let raz and Sergio Hoover up

Good overall performance, has to improve his finishing and positioning. With the rumours we are looking for an extra ST, along with extending Aguero’s contract, he might be better off as RW/LW.

No but I think he might say that to Txiki or Khaldoon. Pep is not Mourinho so I highly doubt that he will ever directly talk shit to a player. But there are ways. He can speak his mind to Txiki and then he talks to agent and gets the message across to the player in different words. I'm not saying that that has happened with Jesus, but if were to happen, that would be the way I imagine.
