CAS judgement: UEFA ban overturned, City exonerated (report out p603)

I thought I'd do a post from UEFA's point of view after reading the report...boooooo!

What strikes me most is how stupid the whole thing has been from start to finish and what a looney tunes World we live in.

Just a bit of background. The old G14 agreed to officially disband what amounted to a powerful pressure group in return for some of their members being given positions on some decision making sections of UEFA. In some cases this amounted to 50% of the decision making body. The G14 also agreed that they wouldn't break away from UEFA...the often referred to Super-league. This single action was, and still is, UEFA's biggest mistake. They should have kept their independence at all costs even if it meant the G14 leaving UEFA and FIFA.

UEFA kept their part of the bargain. The G14 then morphed into the ECA containing hundreds of clubs throughout Europe. However the old G14 still retained control but were no longer referred to officially as the G14 and were regarded as founding members. The G14 now had an even bigger pressure group and crucially members on the inside of UEFA itself.

G14 used its powers to carry out all sorts of unfair practices. Some of them City fans are well aware of...changing FFP from debt based to turnover based is famous by now as is the redistribution of money from UEFA competitions based on historical success. The threat of a Super-league did not go away.

When City came along it was thought that FFP would limit our success as it would anybody else thinking of doing the same. City's business model however was frighteningly good, it went over FFP like a speed bump. Additionally the CFG were buying clubs from all four corners of the World. City's turnover quickly matched and surpassed that of many of the G14 clubs and City were hoovering up domestic trophies at an alarming rate.

Rather than welcoming the new investment into football G14 were terrified that their income was going down and used all their power to stop us. When DS published their hacked emails about City this was their big chance. They put enormous pressure on UEFA externally and internally to cut us off at the knees never to return.

What happened next is guesswork but won't be far off reading between the lines.

Confident of victory, the G14 and their press friends used the opportunity to attempt to influence public perception and also the two decision making chambers over which they crucially had an amount of control. This included the now famous leaks coming from UEFA itself.

Early reports were suggesting that UEFA's decision was a small fine. The G14 are furious. The emails looked extremely damaging and it looked like City were ignoring the rules but that UEFA was caving in. There was talk of FFP being meaningless if direct investment was allowed, more talk of a break-away and UEFAs governance being woeful. City were not fully cooperating and had something to hide.

UEFA are now in an awful position of their own making and they try to come up with a deal that will keep the G14 and City happy. No deal. A two year ban was announced to everyone's surprise but City.

The press find City guilty immediately. The American owners exert all their power over UEFA and the press that they can influence.

City knew the emails were out of context but did not give UEFA the proof preferring to take the case to CAS. This was a big gamble. As CAS pointed out City should have co-operated before the case reached CAS and UEFA might have not gone ahead with the expulsion. City were concerned about leaks and UEFA's impartiality.

When the case comes to CAS City hand over the full picture. UEFA only had the emails which turned out to be glued together and altered much to UEFA's embarrassment. City are cleared but punished for the smaller charge of none co-operation with the process.

G14 transfer their anger to UEFA in an attempt to remove more UEFA officials not G14 friendly. City and UEFA have talks about removing the UEFA officials that are G14 friendly.

The press are left with crumbs but keep going. With the legal backing now clear City stop some reports likely to cause the most damage.

So here we find ourselves. Who is the enemy now? Remember Soriano's video? It's all in there. City want to work with, not against, UEFA but remove the G14 infestation. City have sympathetic friends in UEFA who now realise they were naive to let certain people into their organisation.

Talk of replacing all of UEFA is dangerous because the replacement could be 100% Pro G14. Much easier to slowly replace the 5% using their influence for self gain.

City have won a big battle. The War has tipped in our favour. City fans want immediate revenge which isn't going to happen.

The old guard will have their power removed slowly and we will never notice it. One day we will be the old guard and we will try to protect ourselves from the new guard and we will be replaced...and on it goes...
Brilliant post.

Actually if you look at it this way, they pay half of our costs for our gazillion lawyers and I am sure they were not cheap. They only had six back street lawyers to feed.
That’s not correct. We each pay half of the costs of the CAS proceedings. Each party then bears their own costs and fees. If City’s cost were more then it was worth it...

If UEFA want to get all the Manchester City fans on their side. They now have the opportunity to do a root and branch clearance off all their boards. Then have new elections for these boards and ban all those clubs from the G14 group of clubs from nominating anyone from standing.

It is about time that we have someone on one off these boards. Then let's start investigation into the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Livarpool, etc. What I want to know is how clubs that play in the Champions League can still have huge debts yet still do not break FFP.

I still expecting UEFA to come back and being new charges against us. This will be done sometime in the next few seasons. We have not seen the last of this. We will just have to wait and see if they will bring any new charges.

Why are you having a pop at her? I'm fairly sure that any statement on such a serious matter would have to be cleared by Khaldoon or Ferran Soriano if not directly released by their office.
Why? Because her remit is covering, amongst other things, media and press relations, communications, and PR. I have NEVER ONCE heard or read of her robustly defending the club’s name, or rejecting the malicious falsehoods printed about our club. Not once. Given her role, and the seniority of it I find that scandalous. That’s why.

Yes I am sure she is happy to leave it to Khaldoon, or Ferran, or more likely to our coach, who said more in one press conference in defence of our club than our Head of Media, PR and Comms has done in a career of many years (forgive me for not knowing the exact job title, tbh it’s hard to tell what she does)

I know it’s fuck all use.but, for what it’s worth this is what I have said in my complaint to the BBC:

I just wanted to say as a usually vociferous advocate of the BBC - which ought to be a cherished unbiased institution., I am utterly despondent at the coverage of the CAS findings between UEFA and Manchester City FC. Someone reading that piece would understand the exact opposite of the truth. Though I strongly suspect that the sad ,unfettered partisanship and tribalism in football is at the root of it, as well as the need for the “click bait” nature of modern , online “churnalism”. Anyway it is clearly biased and it is evident not a modicum of research of the actual document released by CAS has taken place - given it is 93 pages long and the speed at which this witless drivel was published. Suggesting it was “oven ready “ for the report’s release. Truth is there that an English Football club ( the most successful English football club of the last decade) was accused of financial manipulation to circumvent rules on the basis of emails (stolen) which have since been proven to have been , let’s be kind and call it - manipulated. Additionally the key finding isn’t that Manchester City have been fined for not complying.. (with a kangaroo court which was leaking like a sieve ) but rather , that Manchester City Football club was found to have NOT been guilty of circumventing said rules . Anyway in short I have loved the BBC for many decades, but frankly you have failed us all. This piece of badly researched , tribalist, click baiting , pandering to the masses , utterly myopic unbalanced , lacking in depth and nuance- tripe cannot go unchallenged. It in my opinion contravenes the BBC convention on balance and fairness . Thanks for the memories Aunty Beeb, you have let yourself go though if this is anything to measure the current journalistic “stature” by. Select the best category to describe your complaintBiasDo you require a response to your complaint?Yes

Good note but you are wasting your time. I remember the Pete the Badge - Berty nonsense. I complained, the Beeb lied, were caught lying and still wouldn’t admit guilt. They are so holier than thou they can’t admit to their failings on anything - even Stuart Halls behaviour was nothing to do with them.

I note the Liverpool Fucking Echo wants us done for blatant disregard of FFP. It’s not like their local club ever got £50m a year through as valid FFP costs 2 years running for “stadium planning costs”, or hacked into another club’s IT systems and scouting files. Look a bit closer to home for corruption you fucking scouse cunnts

Was it a peace making call or was it a standby to standby type of conversation?

I feel like Khaldoon would have been smooth with it, he constantly deals with international business and political relationships, i'm pretty confident the management of the club will want a positive relationship moving forward too, especially with the ambitions to be consistently successful in Europe.

I think it's time for the club and fans to draw a line under FFP. We were found not guilty and now we can move forward with the developing the club and pushing for more success. It's important to have a good relationship with governing bodies, hence why Khaldoon and Cerefin had a peace-making call once the CAS decision was announced.

We should be focused on the football and long-term success, especially in Europe.
I agree 100%. We need a good relationship with uefa. However we don’t need a good relationship with the media scum who will continue to write shit about us until we start taking strong legal action, whenever and wherever we have a case for defamation. Additionally we should make Sheff Utd our club of choice for loaning out any top young players when they need experience. They play football the right way, and clearly conduct themselves in the right way

"but but but you got fined, so you must be guilty"

Anyone else getting sick of these types of fucktards? Jesus Christ, it's almost as if there isn't a lengthy document explaining the reasoning behind the fine
Absolutely. I had a plastic rag at breakfast saying exactly that. I said "If you were charged with murder and locked up before any trial but were innocent and every time you spoke to the police, they reported back to the family of the victim, the prosecution and the press - would you consider not commenting any further until court?"

He glazed over a bit and said something like "you must've done something dodgy".

It's like banging your head repeatedly against a brick wall. They all want to comment to say that we're cheats but when you point out we're not, then we must've done something. You explain it to them and it becomes boring. Well don't comment in the first place if you don't want to know why you're wrong.

I understand the fans anger towards the media, what we need to understand is that the media industry is now based on sensationalist articles and headlines used to drive online clicks to a publisher's website and in context we're still a small club for generating clicks and people engaging with articles pro-city vs anti-city/pro liverpool/utd. Also there is an over-indexing of liverpool and utd fans in the media, (mentioned by Duncan Castle himself in the latest transfer podcast), and that either conscious or unconscious bias will effect the clubs reporting.

City need to have a long-term plan to alter the media reporting. Offer sports journalism courses from the Etihad campus. Target younger markets where professions have yet to be decided, and then organically we'll have a better, accurate representation in the media.

You forgot the other longer term plan - keep winning trophies. I already see a larger number of City shirts on kids than I ever used to and that is obviously connected to the current success (no glory-hunting jibes - it's just a fact that kids are attracted to teams that win). The current media cohort grew up in the days of Liverpool and/or United success - you don't think they all have a deep personal connection to the cities of Liverpool or Manchester, do you? However, at some point the current crop of City-supporting kids will grow up and some of them will get jobs in the media. It's the long game, I know, but it's how the world works.

We could do worse than start with winning the one competition we are still in this season...

Now it's been proven UEFA used hacked and doctored email to ban City. Who investigates UEFA ?. Why didnt UEFA investigate the souce of the emails ?. Why were there so many leaks by UEFA ? That needs investigate.
Theres alot of questions that need answering from UEFA, it's a shame our press/media havent got any balls to asks these questions.
Why arent questions being asked about the hateful 9 ?

Come the British press/media grow a pair and stop arse licking your bung masters.
Got to be a little careful here. UEFA asked City to confirm the authenticity of the emails but we refused to do so (for reasons that were valid and have been gone over at length). UEFA therefore decided to accept their authenticity and that was correct as clearly decided by CAS. Der Spiegel is the most obvious target for our ire.

I know how the media works pal, and if they can get away with lies they will continue to do so. We won’t ever overtake the support of dippers and rags, which is what causes the click bait lies, so we need to take a hard legal approach
