Kalidou Koulibaly

As good a player Koulibaly is if the reports are to be believed Napoli appear to be just doing a Jorginho on us all over again. They don't really want to sell him unless it's for silly money and even when they have a decent bid on the table they just publicize it to force the price up and try and get someone else to buy him. I really can't see £58.7m at all and I have to agree with tolmie on this I think its going nowhere.

What's your point? Other than Garcia, which is a factor we have no control over, the others are surplus to requirements. We need Koulibaly (or a player of that type), the last time we didn't pay what was required for the guy we really needed was VVD. Look how that turned out.
That’s a terrible take. Read his post again.

Exactly this, and it’s been my fear ever since Koulibaly started getting linked to England a year ago.
Robertson - Van Dijk - Koulibaly - Trent would be too hard to penetrate for most top teams in Europe. I’m just glad Liverpool haven’t realized this and instead is sticking to Gomez who is nowhere near a world class CB. With Koulibaly, they would have easily had the best backfour for many years, even if we managed to sign Skriniar to partner Laporte.

Hopefully Koulibaly is coming here. He has many years left in him, and I could see us play with a back three for many games due to the quality we’d have:

Aké - Laporte - Koulibaly.
You don't have to be world class to be a CB.

Reading of the game, strength, power, intelligence.

CB are at their best when with a partner that compliments them, ie Kompany/Lescott , Lescott very average but a great partnership. I would also add a RAG CB pairing, Brue and Pallister, both not the greatest individually but a great combination.

Who is buying Angelino for £30m? And when do you think we’ll get £20m from Barcelona?
Admire your optimism but reckon we’ll be taking substantial hits on all three. ;-)

£15m for Garcia I reckon, £10-£15m for Otamendi and Angelino about £7m can't see any more than that tbh. Definitely wouldn't pay for Koulibaly.

that would be some climb down from the original 90m that was mentioned Napoli supposedly wanted and even fromt he 65m that was quoted very recently.

Intersting that there are a lot of tweets about this but our trusted resident ITK tolmie has said yesterday that this was going nowhere - I would therefore take anything posted like this with a huge pinch of salt as I think I trust TH more than I do some of these twitter accounts.
£58.7m is just €65m. Wasn't that the quote the other day?

Angelino is arguably the most valuable of the three, given age, experience, and potential, yet you value him least.

Yes because he is yet to prove himself properly at the highest level. When we bought him back for £5/6m he was valued then at about £20m but had been playing in the dutch league. I think we have devalued him by bringing him back, hardly playing him and loaning him back out tbh.

Sorry...you think we're taking a "hit" on a LB we bought for £5m and is starting a CL 1/4 final tonight after being a standout player since arrving at Leipzig, and a CB we got for nothing?

I'd like a hit of whatever you're smoking.

He's not nearly 30. He turned 29 at the end of June. He won't be 30 until we're playing the 21/22 season.

Look at this way.
20/21 - 29 all season
21/22 - 30 all season
22/23 - 31 all season
23/24 - 32 all season
24/25 - 33 all season
25/26 - 34 all season

Terry was 35 and starting regularly for Chelsea. Vinnie left at 33 (and we all know that was because of injuries really and Anderlecht's draw, not cos he wasn't good enough still). Ramos is 34 and still key for Real Madrid. Ferdinand left United at 34 etc etc.

It's genuinely reasonable to presume that as long KK has no severe injuries, he's got 4/5 seasons at a very high level left. Defenders are very fit these days and can play into their early mid 30s no problem.

I've made a similar point before to this and it really rings true. If KDB came on the market now would you turn down a move as he's the same age? No you wouldn't. Age isn't a factor when you're a CB, you don't run as much as a midfield or wide player.

I don't know what planet you're on, but PSG wanted him for £25m last season, and since then he's gone and impressed in Germany, a step up from the Netherlands where he was the best LB in the country.

£7m won't cover his salary at his next club.

We are either in for him or we're not.

Nothing they say will change anything. If we're not bidding already then we already have the money assigned elsewhere.

True,
But that doesn't stop agents touting their players for a pay day. Doesn't stop italian presidents looking to cash in on older players, and certainly doesn't stop mercenaries like Duncan Castles.
And you are right, none of the hype by those people will affect or convince the club to make a rash decision.

Don't understand why the valuation is causing too much of a debate between fans. If Koulibaly wins us the league, improves our defence and helps us to challenge in Europe against the world's best he's going to be worth every penny. A defence is where clubs win titles, and that's exactly why Liverpool battered the league this season. The brilliance of Van Dijk and the absence of Laporte is exactly why we finished 18 points behind them.

Totally agree and the drop of in form this season probably due to all the issues at Napoli.

Almost anarchy there early season and a owner that seems hated by everyone.
