Atalanta are an old side who try to pass through people. tiki-taka style. Beating them is just a case of not letting passes through midfield.

They are nothing like Lyon or Arsenal who hit long balls over midfield into the channel for pace merchants.

Then why on earth is Fernandinho starting? He's slow and easily drawn into duels leaving that side exposed. Which happened time and again leaving Garcia trying to cover for him. Walker should have been there

Can see the logic in his selection but would have put Kyle in the back three with the two Eric's, Cancelo on the right, Mendy on the left and a middle three of Kev, Rodri and Phil. Play as we should do fast and on the front foot.

This is where I'm at too. I understand that we are really vulnerable in a back 4, so a back 3 with Walker's pace makes sense.

But Cancelo was not good at LWB tonight, he's not a left back, and he didn't take the space they offered down the outside. Mendy would have been much better, and Cancelo would have been much better on the right than Walker who was really poor, just played like a RB outside Fern.

If you think that was the right way to set up against Lyon then your clueless pal.

Now off you go to the transfer forum where you can play your fantasy itk out.
Murph my guy.

Please explain to me the correct way to set up against Lyon's 5-3-2 deep block...

I just said above I thought Fern was the bad selection and should have been Walker, with Mendy and Cancelo as wingbacks on their right sides.

But presumably Pep values Fern's experience? I don't know.

Apparently I'm the only Manchester City fan who saw us lose to Arsenal, Southampton, Wolves, Spurs, United, Norwich etc. while playing 433 vs very similar sides to Lyon.
That's why I liked the post below of my prematch squad and reasoning then, and even more now.

442, A little more attention to defense than three up front, and not far off of what we are accustomed with, and very easy to be aggressive going forward. what i would like.
---------------------eddie
walker----Fernie---------Laporte----Cancelo
Bernie------Rodri--------Kev --------foden
-----------sterling----------Jesus

pep will start gundy and probably mendy

Pep of all people? Perhaps we should know better?

How do you justify that starting line up in a Champions League Quarter-Final? And then you leave it for an hour to change it?!

This was not just a marginal call, it was a simply inexplicable and totally destructive midfield selection.

How do you stand in front of the dressing room and demand more of your players when you make a team selection like that? In one evening he takes on a figure of ridicule.

It is impossible to defend Pep's team selection tonight and it's simply unforgivable for a coach to make such a mistake in a game of this proportion.
I rarely find myself agreeing with your frankly 'odd' posts, but this is a fair call, Marvin.

If we had both Mendy and Cancelo, it would've been wayy too Attacking (even in a Back 3 formation)

Because unless Mendy & Cancelo both pushed up at once, then it would not have changed much.

the MAIN PROBLEM with our formation was the creativety from midfield.

If we had 17/18 David instead on Gundo playing, the game would've been completely different.

I edited and said it should have been Walker too. He done it at the World cup and he's the fastest man on the pitch so that removes that threat from his side. I'd have also gone with Stones in the middle of the 3. He's the best passer of all our defenders and he's good in the air(Garcia didn't win a single header).

Thought you would be in the transfer forum chatting pretend itk shit.

Watch how Bayern play against them, they won't change formation and will outclass them.

Funny how we only really started to create chances after Fern got the hook.

Does a Bayern Munich or a Real Madrid, change the way they play for a Lyon?

They have belief in what they do and they roll with it - not change to a system they don't play semi-regularly. Pep showed Lyon too much respect tonight. Maybe that's because we have a rickety defence, but we play our best football when we attack. If we haven't got the defence to take our style to the very top, then we need to add the personal - and we've had 4 years so far to do it.

I love him and want him to sign a new contract but tonight was his fault, we were up against it from the start. Just the wrong setup.

Why? What has he done that Mancini/Pellegrini didn’t/couldn’t?

The owners have spent close to £1b in signings, salary, buying Girona etc to get Pep - I’m sure they were expecting more than 2/4 titles and annual European exit at the quarters.

He’s a decent manager, but he’s never overachieved anywhere, and that’s the true standard of greatness.

I think he's a busted flush here now. He has his favourites no matter what to the great detriment of the team. Fearing Lyon, Bang average team yet managed to do us over. Crazy selection, tactics and slow to change. Seen it all before from him sadly.
Couldn't have fucked up any worse.

Has a mental problem in the CL.

I wonder whether Bayetn trashing Barca changed our plans and Pep decided to try another, more defensive formation. Shit choice anyway.

I said explain to me the correct way to set up against Lyon's deep 5-3-2 Block?

Maybe you can't?

Love Pep, but he fucked it. In isolation it’s no big thingbut it’s happened too often and the club can’t allow it to continue.

I think if he stayed for another 5 years we’d win the league at least 3 times. But he’s always gonna fuck it in the CL. I thought he’d learned with the Madrid games.

Question is, can we live with domestic success only. I don’t think Khaldoon and SM can.

I said explain to me the correct way to set up against Lyon's deep 5-3-2 Block?

Maybe you can't?

Why would a forum user on here be tasked with explaining that?

It's Pep's job to work it out, with the most expensive squad in world football at his disposal to aide him.

In terms of building a team that is the best at football, Pep is the best manager, and it shows in League seasons - his teams are often unstoppable.

In terms of one off big matches he gets it wrong as often as he gets it right.

As others have said, you wouldn't see Barca, Bayern, Real, making dramatic changes to counter Lyon's style of play - they'd play their usual in form best 11. We should have done that in my opinion.

Edit: I should add I'm delighted he's our manager and hope he stays.
